Dual Core question ????????? HELP - Page 2

I just retired my Intel P4 2.53ghz with 512mb RAMBUS on a Gigabyte
GA-8IHXP motherboard with 2 7200 RPM Maxtor hard drives and built a Dual Core Intel 840 EE with 2gigs DDR2 on a Gigabyte GA-8I955X Royal motherboard with 3 10,000 RPM WD Raptors in a RAID 5 configuration. The differences are wide in performance.
As I've read in the tests the Intel shines on office applications and multitasking. I surf alot and the Dual Core may be a bit slower than the old 2.53 until I read here about setting the affinity and when I pointed my ZA Pro firewall to use CPU 2 instead of all CPU's I did see equal performance. The main thing I do is use several office applications at once and PaintShop Pro. This Dual Core smokes on Paintshop and opening up several apps at once. In time when more apps and hopefully Vista use this puppy I think I will be happy. I always run at 36-39c with all I can throw at it. I don't really have anything other than my applications to test it with but I'm happy.

I couldn't be happier than to learn about the affinity thing here. Why didn't I read this in my motherboard manual or Windows tell me?

You press Ctrl-Alt-Del to make the "Task Manager" window appear.
Then you go to the 2nd tab which says "Processes" and you right click on the process and you set it to use CPU affinity 0 or CPU affinity 1.
When I set my ZA Pro to a certain affinity it seems to speed up my system on the internet. When I restart it goes back and I have to reset it. Is there a way to make it permanent?

Not to my knowledge.
As far as I know the process loses its "cpu affinity" settings as soon as it ends or it is killed.
Sorry about that.

stick with your chip that you have right now. Doing from a Pentium 4 3.8 LGA775 to a Pentium D 820 will give u performance decrease, especially in gaming. I strongly suggest you stay with what you have now.
