The worst thing I did was not hooking up the on/off button on my case.... That was fun for 10 min while I checked all the wires in the case!

I plugged my power button cables into the wrong pins. It sure sucked when i hit the button for the first time and... Nothing!

That wasn't the worst thing I did. When I built my first computer, I didn't know I needed a CPU fan. Needless to say... it didn't boot for very long, or at all. Funny thing is that it never smoked or anything, it just failed to work after like 2 sec of being turned on. Thankfully, Newegg took it back and I bought a CPU fan locally and it fired up perfectly. And thus, subsequent builds were more... thought out.
