There were two problems, one being the usual capacitor layout which was solved by trimming one edge of the RAMsink. The other problem was with the regulator heatsink, which is apparently also different than the reference card. It was around 6mm too tall, which I was able to loosen/offset the plastic housing on the cooler and allow the core's sink to sit flush. This allows some air to exhaust in the case, and I'm sure it changes the airflow dynamics internally for the cooler, but I'm sitting at 790/1100, and running around 16C lower than the stock cooler/clocks, and all the hot air is exiting the case (running a poor flowing case, it makes all the difference with the air exhausting outside rather than inside).

The copper surface on the sink looked pretty rough, so in the future a good "lapping" session is in order once I get in a new Zalman sink for the regulators so I can close up the plastic assembly.

UPDATE: I took off the heatsink as I was going to smooth-out the copper surface but the mounting lugs that are on the heatsink are pressed in, and I don't want to damage them by trying to pull them out. So until i get to change out the regulator sink, these are about the best temps I can get....for now.
More info: I've looked for a non-reference reg. cooler, and cannot find one. Looks like I'll have to make one myself I have an old Pentium 2 sink that I will machine to fit as it is fairly low-profile.

I finally got a nice flowing case as a Christmas present from my Mom (Beta Evo) and the idle temps are now 56 C and load never sees north of 68 C.

Accelero s1 R2 works on the 5870. Still have to have that one ram sink near the bottom hitting the pipe(just sand it down). Have a 1500RPM fan at 3 volts(around 800 RPM) cooling it.

I'd love to see a picture of this mounted.

Went ahead and added my experience with the Akasa Vortexx Neo and the HIS H487FN1GP 1Gb HD4870. Glad I could help out!

Oh, another thing about my entry: I would suggest lengthening the fan cables. My motherboard has 3pin connectors near both PCI-E slots, but the stock cable can't reach it.

Just got the Scythe Setsugen for my 4870 1GB, but I am having troubles figuring out what goes where. I need help, and fast, so I am going to post a link to my thread, and if you could help me out in any way, it would be much appreciated!!
You don't need specific knowledge of the setsugen cooler, just general info is needed. Thanks!

That cooler looks way cool(pun intended ). It must be the successor to the musashi
post #37 of 62
yea it is. Its fairly new, and there aren't a whole lot of reviews on the internet, but I took the plunge and went for it. Since you have the musashi, then maybe you can help me out with the setsugen as they must be similar

Hey there,

Can i ask real quick if this cooler can be used in crossfire? I know the spacing would be tight depending on the fan you mount?

On a second note what water cooling solution would you recommend for 2 4890's in crossfire.

Cheers.

The Musashi cooler is the same size if not smaller than the stock cooler, so I believe it will work in CF. I cannot verify 100%, but I am pretty sure it will.

As for water cooling, I have no idea

Thanks for the reply. I suppose the biggest limiting factor for me would be the fact that if i wanted to change the fans on the Musashi i'd have be limited in size. I'd like to space my cards apart one pci slot but i'd need a 100mm crossfire bridge. Only found those on ebay and for $20... which is a bit much for some plastic and wire.

Any ideas who else might sell them, i check on www.PriceBot.ca and www.ShopBot.ca with no luck.
