Upgrade to Win7 from RTM question...

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

My dad works out of the house, and on his main machine, he has Windows 7 RTM running. When Win7 is officially released, will he have to do a full install again, or will be simply be able to "upgrade" to the real version of 7 and be able to keep his current programs and stuff for work?

Thanks in advance

rtm is the "real version" of windows 7. RTM stands for release to manufacturing.

I know it's the real version of it, and that it's the release to manufacturing. I'm just asking if he will (sometime in the future) need to actually get the version that hits the shelves? Or will the RTM never do that 2-hour restart thing?

He is running the final version of windows, all necessary updates will come through windows update, you'll be able to install service packs etc.

There is no difference between RTM and what is on store shelves.

Alright! Thanks everyone who responded so fast! Good to know his computer won't restart and that he won't have to reinstall anything

you had it confused with the RC (release candidate) which shuts off in may or so and dies in june.

he won't have to do anything - as far as MS is concerned he is running the same version of windows that will be on store shelves come Oct 22.
