Some questions about current cards

Thread Starter
This is another "help, what to buy bla bla bla" topic hehe

I got some simple questions

I'm aiming for making a nice machine for something like 1500$...

Without putting much thought in it I chose a nice AMD 64 X2 3800+ with Asus A8N-SLI Premium Mobo and propably 1gb pc3200 ram (thinking for a nice GEIL package).

I was thinking of getting a nvidia gforce7800 but here comes the questions and the confusion. Is it a good choice or shall I look at some ATI cards? Is it worth getting the 7800gtx or is the money difference not respective to the performance difference? If we settle with a 7800gt which brand would you recommend?

Thanks in advance for the replies.

If you arent partial to a certain company. IMO the 7800gtx is a better price.
100+ dollars for a bit more performance really isnt worth it.
UNLESS of course you are planning to go the crossfire route (if it ever happens LoL) then get the 1800xt because in theory its more powerful than sli.
But for a single card Id say get the gtx or the gtx 512.

the 7800gt is likely the best card/value right now. ati x1800xl is decent but nvidia has their stuff inorder right now. gtx is better but probable not worth the extra money, as a gt is around $300 right now. as for brands ive heard great things about evga, they also have a step up program where you can get an upgraded card for the proce difference withing 90 days or something.

The ATI cards are good, but are a bit more expensive at the moment for a product that performs about the same as the 7800 range.
The 7800GT performs very well against the GTX, but it depends if you want that extra speed. Personally, I went for the GTX for those extra few frames, but if you want to save a few $ the GT is a probably the better model in the cost vs performance ratio.

Looks to me like for the most part Nvidia is winning so I'd stick with that. Here's a recent article by Tom's hardware that has quite a few cards (Link).

At close to the end of the article it also has their opinion of what you'll gain from a different card. Personally I don't think it's worth that extra money for the GTX unless you're main concern is bragging rights/benchmarks (or money is not an issue)

I argee, best value for cost has got to be 7800 gt but if it is within your budget I would get a 7800 gtx. If you want to go all out get the 7800 gtx 512 mb. I have read that there is a notable performance gain over 256mb version. As far a brands go, get a BFG Tech. They have 24/7 phone support and a real lifetime warranty
