Q9400 on P43Twins1600 with DDR3 - need help!!

Hi,

I'm running a Q9400 on Asrock P43Twins1600. It's a brand-new build, and I was initially using DDR2 (OCZ2G800R22GK) with default jumper & BIOS settings.

I recently upgraded to some Corsair DDR3 (TW3X4G1333C9A), hoping that everything would run in sync using FSB 1333 (cpu, mobo, & ram). However, when I installed it for the first time, the system reset almost instantly, i.e. even before the BIOS options. It did this about 3 times, before finally allowing WinXP to boot.

When I ran CPU-Z, it reports the DDR3 running at DRAM frequency of 400 Mhz, and FSBRAM ratio of 5:6.

I tried setting the jumpers according to the FSB 1333, but this made no change to either DRAM frequency nor FSBRAM ratio.

I also tried changing the DRAM frequency in the BIOS from 'AUTO' to 'DD3 1333', but again this simply caused multiple pre-boot crashes, reverting each time to the DDR3-800 setting.

It's driving me nuts… what am I doing wrong? Can anyone help with suggestions or a solution?

Thanks!!

update bios.

your using TRI channel ram, so which means in sync, three modules will equal 1333mhz, so roughly 400mhz x 3 = 1200mhz, which is CLOSE.

How is he using TRI channel on a p43 chipset? Not to mention the ram he posted is a dual channel kit.

Yeah... I'm using dual channel (see TW3X4G1333C9A at http://www.corsair.com/products/xms3/default.aspx for details). It just happens to be DDR3, but not a tri-channel kit.

I have the latest BIOS running, so there's no advantage to be gained.

Just to confirm, the FSB is running at 1333 and the DRAM is running at an unspecified higher rate, giving the ration of 5:6. According to the manufacturer, the lowest base frequency for this memory is 433 MHz.

To be honest, I'm starting to think that I've over-egged the build specs by buying DDR3. Should have stuck with dual channel DDR2 800 (PC2-6400), and de-tuned it to run at 1:1 ratio.

Anyone else got any ideas?
