My First AMD Build.

Thread Starter
This is my first time building a pc. I would like something that will run all new games and even the upcoming ones.

Ive already decided to get the 7800GT or GTX so thats out of the way

I was thinking about getting the 3700+ but how far can I overclock it with air cooling? im either going to get the XP-120 or Big Typhoon

Ive decided on the mobo. Im going with the DFI UT Expert or whatever, forgot the exact name.

Im not sure on the ram yet. Im looking for some good overclocking ram. whats better for todays gaming 1 or 2gigs?

I also need a power supply to run this system..

help me out please

that set up looks good so far, what kind of budget do you have? the big typhoon is better than the XP (typhoon isusually considered the best air cooling out there). i dont game a bunch but i hear the newer games like BF2 and CoD2 use up TONS or ram, go with 2 gigs there.

Well the 7800GT is an awesome investment, I just got mine a few days ago and i couldnt be happier.

As for the CPU, most 3700+s reach a wall at 2.8ghz, im at 2.85 max, but when I get my water cooling, Im pretty sure I will be able to go higher, with that xp-120 you should be able to get 2.9ghz...

For the ram, Well the best overclocking 2gb kit ive seen is this:

As for the PSU try an antec truepower II 550W.

nice, the default timings look good. Ill get that. the PSU also looks good. would I get much more performance from a dual core processor though? there kina expensive but is it worth it?

the dual cores are good, but they wont help you play any games ....yet, but if your going to be multi tasking alot, then the dual cores are a good buy. but the 3700+ will be a better gamer for you.

You would not see more performance from a dual core unless using a program that is CODED to use BOTH cores, dual cores wont be used in games for at least another year so its not worth it right now IMO.

Ive seen that ram reach 300fsb, but that was with an opteron 148, so either get that or the 3700+ .

DO NOT GET THE DFI SLI-DR EXPERT!!!!!! trust me, complaints along many forums have arisen complaining about the DFI expert mysteriously frying AMD's at stock speed for no reason. At least wait until the DFI SLI-DR expert rev.2 is released or just get the original SLI-DR as the only difference is the space between the gfx cards...

Uhm no, the difference is more voltage options and other BIOS overclocking options that were previously unincluded with the other boards...not just the gfx cards -__-.

G.SKILL IS a well known brand, theyre practically one of THE best makers of memory on the market today along with GeIL and mushkin.

So, I say GET the expert, it will be a great investment, where shark got his information of it frying cpus at stock I dont have a clue, but it was probably a bunch of n00bs raising the voltages too damn high.
