Open Registry by going to START-RUN and typing REGEDIT. Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\CONTROL PANEL\\DESKTOP

and look for AutoEndTasks. On my computer default value is 0. Change it to 1. Thats all. Further more you can reduce the time it takes for Windows to issue kill directive to all active/hung applications. In doing this only constraint that you should make sure exists is that HungAppTimeout is greater than WaitToKillAppTimeout. Change the values of WaitToKillAppTimeout to say 3500 (since default value for HungAppTimeout 5000 and for WaitToKillAppTimeout is 20000)
I actually tried this and it took about 3 minutes off my time. Thanks HotDog! The rest.

Interesting, thanks for that bit of information. Can you use that to speed up start up too, or not?

aside from running programs... (if you dont know what I mean I guess u cant fix it).... windows runs on a lot of timers... (e.g. timer till shutdown) familiarize yourself with what programs u have running till shutdown... then modify shutdown timer ( www.tweakguides.com)

I'd recommend Bootvis (theres a download link for it in logan's link), always notice a difference on every machine I run it on.

Run a trace with it before you optimize to figure out how much time it shaved off.

Only other thing not mentioned here is boot sequence I guess. In bios set the boot priority with the hard disk containing the OS as the top so it wont waste time checking the optical drives before loading windows.

go to start > run > type in msconfig and look for a check that says load start up items and uncheck it, that will help with boot times.
