RMA opinions needed please !

Hey guys ... I bought a 2 gig dual channel kit from newegg.com of Crucial Ballistix RAM ... very expensive so my first pair I get, one stick is defective so they swap it out for another set... after a month now one of the sticks is bad on this set too. Newegg.com wants me to RMA it through Crucial instead of them as they might have a bad batch.. ?

I can do one of 2 things:

1. RMA the bad stick with Crucial and risk this other stick going bad in a month or them not working in dual channel? I could always RMA that stick if it went out...

2. RMA both sticks and be without my computer for probably better part of 2 weeks but recieve 2 for-sure working RAM sticks after that long time.

What would you do ? Are there any other risks with #1 ?

I'd probably RMA both so that you could ensure you got 2 sticks of the same RAM. I've had a problem where I had two mistmatched sticks of RAM and my computer wouldn't POST.

so your saying go with the 2 weeks of computer down time ? that's a lot for me LOL ... not sure I could do it

What if I RMA the one bad stick, and it comes back not working together, would I be able to RMA the other stick to Crucial or not
post #4 of 9
you could, if it were me tho i would RMA both sticks and just buy a really cheap stand-in stick.

You should be able to. I'd speak with their tech support folks and see what you can work out. I was lucky I was upgrading to 2GB (4x512) and could send away the other sticks. I got 4 brand new sticks of RAM out of it.

such a hard choice. thanks for the input. I will try the Crucial tech's and see if I can RMA the sticks 1 at a time but it is highly unlikely since it works and I purchased it third party of them... wouldn't you say ?

Call Crucial and I bet they will overnight you memory.
A bad batch, possible but I doubt it, but they do stand behind there stuff...
Like I said complain politely and state you must have your computer for business needs and they should overnight them.

but I purchased it from newegg.com not from Crucial so I don't see them doing anything special for me

what should I tell them / try to work out when I call them tommorrow?
It shouldn't really matter where you purchase it from. As Duke said explain your situation politely and I'm sure they can work something out with you.
