Guess I spoke too soon about the lack of bug reports.

Someone on the GSM forums posted about a bug which causes GameSave Manager to crash. After a few posts back and forth, I've discovered the cause; if GSM is set to "detect all gamesaves" but it can't find a Steam Cloud and/or Steam Cache directory, it will send a empty string to the detection engine which results in a error and GSM freezing.

I've fixed this issue, but I am currently in the process of formatting my computer (currently typing this on my Netbook). As a result, I haven't got a clue as to when I'll release a new program build.

For now though, here's now to fix the issue YOURSELF:
  1. Navigate to your Steam Installation directory (the default directory is C:\\Program Files (x84)\\Steam).
  2. Create a folder called "userdata". Within this directory, create another folder (can be left as "New Folder").
  3. Within the "%steam%\\steamapps" directory (where "%steam%" is the directory described in Step 1), create another folder (again, this can be left as "New Folder" if you wish).
Remember, you only need to perform the steps above if you have selected "detect all gamesaves" AND don't have a "Steam Cloud" and/or "Steam Cache" account on the system.

I will try to get the new program build compiled by the weekend, but no promises.

Now that I've got most of my stuff re-installed after yesterday's format, I've started work on the new build.

Anyway, I've got some news that a few of you may love; I'm currently trying to add "7zip" into GSM (to try and make it abit quicker). My intial test is VERY promising.
Here's my logs:

With v1.5 (Build 1789): - current stable version

It's still VERY buggy, but if I can get it working it will be a great update for GSM.
It's also made the backup around 5 megabytes smaller using the ALPHA (this is using 7zip's default compression of 5 - it goes up to 9).

Watch this space.

I have removed my son's old hard drive and installed Windows 7 on a new drive. I copied over the steam directory from the old drive to the new drive...however his saved files and status are not working. I downloaded the GameSave Manager program to backup those files, but can't figure out how to tell it to look for those files and settings on the old drive, which is in an external enclosure plugged into a usb port. Is there a way to tell it to only look on the external enclosure (drive f, in my case)?

Thanks...it looks like a great program!

have you reinstalled steam, or started its service again so that steam can reinstall itself into the registry? it realy shouldnt matter where the games are installed to. as long as the games are installed on the system GSM should be able to do the rest and find out whats installed on the system and in conjunction where its saved to thus restore the backups to the approriate places

I'll gladly add those games, if you tell me the locations of where the saves are stored.
If they save in the directory the game is installed, I'll also need a Registry Value that contains the path (the game makes these when installing).

If a game saves to a "standard" path (such as Documents and AppData), then GameSave Manager will allow you to restore the backups, even if the game isn't installed.
If however, a game saves in it's installation path (or a directory within the "Steam installation directory), you'll need to re-install the game before GameSave Manager can detect the path (or in Steam's case, simply run "steam.exe" and it will automatically create the registry values again).
