Is this an overclock?

post #1 of 16
Thread Starter
Hi
Im a newbie but i think ive picked it up quiet quickly [i may be wrong]
I have just done a overclock but is it really an overclock or have i lost performance somewhere else?

settings used
cpu = amd 64 3200+ [939] runnin @ 2.4ghz
mem corsair twinx pc 4400 2.5-4-4-8 runnin@ 2-3-3-8 @240 fsb
Cpu multiplier = 10x
Htt = 4x
temp on load with stock cooling 48c.

Has this gained me performance or have i lost performance dropping the htt to 4x instead of 5x.

My cpu would go alot further but not on stock cooling.

Am i along the right lines?

id say that you've done a good job, you havn't lost performance lowering your htt to 4, you've gained stability (240x4= 960, it should never be above 1000) your ram is at 480mhz and your timings are tighter than stock. just dont go any farther on stock cooling, for the 64's dont go above 50c for load.

Whats your Vcore at? 48c under load is good. What are you putting it under load with? I use Prime95 and super Pi togetherand sit and watch the temps. I have found that each speed as well as different combos of FSB and Multi for the same speed have different Vcore sweet spots. More Vcore is not always better even if your temps are good. Without knowing your Vcore all I can do is give you general advice. First try putting your Vcore up a notch and run Prime95 torture test and super pi at the same time while running your temp program to see whats happening. If you get any errors try putting your Vcore one notch below where it was and do the same thing.

It sounds to me like your computer is just on the edge of stability and you might be able to get it rock solid just by tinkering with voltages.

EDIT: Sandra is not a reliable Load or Stress test. An unstable CPU will run sandra fine a lot of times. I have OCed my computer to 2740mhz and run sandra fine only to get errors in Super Pi and Prime95 after a few seconds. A computer is not stable untill it can run a full cycle of Super Pi on the 32m setting and Prime95 for 4 to 10 hours without errors.

My vcore was 1.55v coz as soon as i change it to 1.6v the temps r too high.
For some reason superpi was passing the 32m test and now its failing
Memory is @ 2.7v

Try lowering the Vcore to 1.45 then upping it one notch at a time till you get back to 1.55 to see if maby you missed a sweet spot.

My cpu is demanding too much voltage i give it 1.65v and it was happy with prime95 but it started to to reach 55c

Is there any other way i can overclock this keeping similar clock but lowering temps?

Losen up your timmings, what is your vdimm set to. You don't want to over do the vcore, you only use what it takes to make the system stable.
