Heat-Pipes -> Desktop vs Tower cases

Thread Starter
So the idea behind the heatpipe is that the coolant boils, "rises", gets cooled, and "falls" back down, ..... and the whole process repeats.

How is this affected by its orientation in a PC case -> desktop vs tower ?

It seems to me a heatpipe would loose its "rise & fall" ability when used in a tower case. Or is this all irrelevant in the CPU cooling application.

I was wondering the same thing. I'd think a tower cooler or equivalent would lose efficiency when placed horizontally.

They use capilary action to return the fluid if it is mounted sideways.

yea alot of them are designed to run horizontally, as most cpu's are mounted horizontally. plus the hot and cold creats low pressure actions and draws the cold to where the hot is, i think thats the action hrny is talking about. bit diffrent as blood has a pump.

I am currenlty working with satellite heatpipe technology, and unless the design of the heatpipe in radically different, the capillery action makes it work in any direction, regardless of gravity.
