Help with installing CPU!

Thread Starter
Well I finally saved up and made my purchases:

Sempron64 2800+
Asus K8V-E
Enermax 350W
Kingston 512MB DDR400

The Sempy was in a retail box, so does it already have a thermal compound applied? It looks a bit hazy but I can't be sure.

TIA

No it won't have any. There may be a piece of clear tape over the bottom. You'll have to apply some thermal compound yourself.

Thanks. I'm guessing the HS won't have any either?

You'll have to apply the thermal comp. yourself. Have fun with that. That would be at least a tad better than the P3.

EDIT: Nope, not even on HS. Do you already know how to apply thermal comp.?

EDIT2: Put a BB size (or rice grain) oh the CPU die, and spread it with a credit card sort of thing or a toothpick. I'm supposing that it's not an open-die (the CPU with a tiny bit die in the center). If it's open, then you would apply just enough to cover the area evenly and thinly. Too much thermal comp. will overheat the CPU.

The retail FHS unit comes with a thermal compound tape on it. It's protected by a plastic cover which must be removed.

Are you sure? Mine looks like a silver square (obviously ) and theres a gray textured square the size of the CPU heatspreader in the middle of the HS. Is that thermal compound?

Hmm,
Thermal compound is like a grey , white glue, that is between the hs and cpu.

So if there's no thermal compound on the HS it will be a smooth surface, but if it is there, a square of greyish gummy stuff will be in the middle of it?

That greyish "Tape" is the thermal compound... just barely toutch the corner is will squish, thats why there was a plastic cover over the heatsink
