Turning to AMD

Thread Starter
Now i have some money to spare and atm i have a pentium 4 HT 550 3.4Ghz 1mb L2 Cache. Now I think i may go AMD i need a good future proof (2 - 3 years) processor that can run the games now and future i have 2gb ram and a good high-end board (will purchase)

Now here are my options:-

I have an ATI x300 GFX card - so i can do the following:-

Keep the GFX card and on board sound and spend £440 on a processor (thats $US 762)

Buy the 6800GS and get a Creative Sound card (high end see sig!) but keep Processor

Anyone have any other ideas i want BETTER PROCESSOR then i have now i know my p4 is at 3.4 but AMD can run is it 9 ops to intels 6 or something?

Anyway i hope someone can help thanks.

the 9 to 6 thing is the number or processes per clock cycle. amd does 9 and intel does 6, so when you do the conversion you'll see that your 3.4 intel is at about 2.26 amd speed. so what kind of processor are you wanting, 700 usd is can get you alot of processor, but it depends on what you want. do you want dual core, a normal 64/opteron (single core) processor. you said that you want to run mostly games right? si if i were you id go with a higher end single core, and upgrade to a dual core farther down the line when they have more programs that can take advantage of the dual cores. so then its just which one. the san diegos and opterons all have 1mb L2 cache, so they'll be your best bet, or look into how much you can get a FX-55 for, those a pretty nice.
