Finally coaxed a 3d03 run out of it tonight, but still only 4.64 ghz. And that only happened after I started to get the sneaky suspicion that this thing was crashing because of a coldbug..........at -55!!
Out of concern that I'm wasting a lot of high end hardware on a board that turbo throttles, I responded to EVGA's email alert that the ClassyX4 is back in stock.......
Well I hate you got a bad chip, hopefully a new chip and mobo will get you back up in your high clock ability range. Hey at least it's still fun clocking even with a dog, frustrating I know, but at least your clocking...
Oh, I'll pick up another W3570 or 975 to play with. i9 is a long ways away.....
Not every chip does well. The top guys go through dozens of CPU's, sometimes scores of CPU's, to find a nice overclocker. I'm sure someone else could find the right combo of settings/mobo to eke some more out of it. Heck, just being able to put turbo on should get it to 4.8. But it's nowhere near the mid 5 ghz range I'm dreaming about.
But, as much as it sucks, that's also part of the fun. How exciting would a golden chip be if they were all golden? Victory is sweeter if you have to fail a lot before it's attained.
Truer words have never been spoken, it's just luck of the draw with what kind of clock you'll get from a chip. Like you say the top clockers are dealing with hand picked "Golden" chips from the git-go. Must be nice..
..Most of the chips they are using you could throw on a WC'ing rig and get real decent suicides out of. And it's all sponsored gear, they don't care what they kill.
But that kind of commercial clocking really must take the fun out of it,it would to me anyway, sure they have "Golden" chips but they always have to worry about producing "World Class" clocks out of them to. That would be to much like work to me, not that I'm in that league anyway, I'm sure you would be if you wanted to go that route .
Every-time I've ever tried to make a business out of a hobby, certified Morgans and a loverly dairy farm for example..
.., I've ended up hating it beyond belief. So anything to do with comp's is just fun and relaxation to me, well when I'm not cussing it anyway...
