SLI versus Multi-Monitor Setup...

Hey everyone.

I'm in the process of buying/biulding my dream machine and I've come upon a graphics dilema.

My current computer (a Pentium 4 2.2Ghz) has two ATI gfx cards... I have a total of 4 monitors connected to the computer. My main card is pretty powerfull so my games look decent, and I make full use of the extended desktop space for multitasking, etc. I really dont think I could go back to a single monitor setup.

For my new PC I was thinking of getting two 7800GTX cards in SLI and a ASUS A8N SLI Premium mobo. Is this a wise choice? I believe the A8N Premium has a BIOS option to turn OFF and ON SLI, but would that be convenient?

I could have the cards but not in SLI.... and get the benefit of just one card. Is there any solution to this?

Your opinions and suggestions are welcome.

THANKS

The A8N Premium does have an option in the BIOS to turn on and off SLI.

Do you really need to run 4 monitors at once? If you do then yes two GTX's will work fine but you wont be able to run the cards in SLI as it joins them together as one card (both cards do half the work making them more efficient)...kind of like what RAID does with hard drives, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

So if you want to run 4 monitors at one time you have to run them as separate cards, and then change over to SLI for gaming, but that would require a reboot to change the BIOS again and that could be pretty tedious after a while.

Honestly though running games with 1 7800GTX will be totally fine for the next couple of years so unless there is some game that you REALLY want to play in SLI with those 2 monsterous cards then go for it but 1 will be ample enough
