G71 is Nvidia's next generation high end chip

Thread Starter
IT HAPPENS every four months. Nvidia set the new trend of releasing its new top end card every four months and it's not going to stop now. It just released its ghost Geforce 7800 GTX 512 product and the demand for it is incredible. A lot of people want it as it’s the fastest card around for Yule but you just can not get any.

G71 will end up with a new Geforce name, new number and probably GTX suffix but it's still too early to talk about the final name. It will have a very fast core, we still don’t know the number but it should be around 700MHz and it's obviously paired with super fast memory. The memory is not the problem and even Samsung memory running at 1700 MHz+ is not in tight supply.

The chip will have 32 pipelines and it's obviously faster than just arrived and not so available Geforce 7800 GTX 512 cards. It's expected in early February and Nvidia is already playing with these cards.

Nvidia is working hard on its 90 nanometre process and its investors are really concerned about it. We figure out that mobile part based around G72 chip is 90 nanometre or at least should be based on that, and Nvidia is in volume production with its C51 chipsets, also 90 nanometre based.

This card is meant to fight R580 ATI's new high end chip that is scheduled for a similar time. µ

From what I've read so far, the R580 and G71 are kind of like what the R360 was to the R300 and what the G70 was to the NV40. Not a new generation, just more speed. The G80 is still scheduled for later on with support for SM4.0, DX10, and GDDR4. From what I've gathered, the G71 is just a 32-pipeline 7800GTX. They might even call it the 7900GTX
Dunno about the R580 though, I had heard previously that it was the next-gen unifed shader card, now it sounds like it's just an improvement over the R520 with beefier pipelines instead of more of them. Perhaps the R600 is the new and fancy unified shader card coming who knows when.

If they're just going to keep trying to make faster cards, why don't they mod an Intel or AMD 2+Ghz processor onto the card?

Cause it would be incredibly slow. Go run the CPU render test in 3DMark03 or 05 and you'll see what I mean
I wish they'd stop putting new stuff out so fast... they've had the technology and the ability to build cards like this for probably the last year. I dunno about you guys, but I would be totally willing to pay $700+ for a video card if it would last more than six months.

Its not a good thing if they keep making you buy new ones more and more often.

How do they make you buy new vid cards? Its great cause it drives the cost of cards down.
