G71 is Nvidia's next generation high end chip - Page 4

GPUs lack certain components that are needed for general processing.

And nVidias new card every four months plan is dumb. One every six months would be fine, but four months is just too often.

Why? Because ATI may not be able to keep up? All this is good for us. It pushes down the prices on cards rapidly so they become more affordable.

Card prices have been increasing. What are talking about? Pretty soon were gonna have $1000 cards just like we have $1000 dollar processors, if trends continue.

And Id rather have an even better card released less often than one thats rushed to be out every four months.

Im sure they wont release a "rushed card". And the 7800GTX 512 was limited quantity, so thats why they head it prices so high up.

The new top end cards are getting more expensive, sure, but look at the middle-range cards. You can buy a 7800GT for $300. I don't think there has ever been a time where you can buy such a fast card for so little considering the GT is about 5-10% slower than the GTX at almost $200 less. I think it's great, faster cheaper hardware for the masses allows game developers more freedom in how advanced they can make games assuming more people will be able to afford high-end hardware. It also makes SLi a more feasible option if they keep releasing speed bumps on current generation products. 2 7800GTs would mop the floor with a 7800GTX 512MB, and at about $100 less too. I'm almost tempted to sell my GTX and get a GT and another one later on.

It may help benchmarks, but in real games, the video card is the driving force in performance, the CPU takes a second-row seat. That's why if you're building a computer, invest the most in the video card, then the processor, then the RAM. I've played on machines running a 7800GTX and an Athlon 64 3200+ at stock and it's still a beast and devours Battlefield 2.
Your damn right that it devours games..
Especially overclocked!

that's the worst phrase ever "turn the detail down"

Anywho, I just got my 7800GTX 512MB, only 1 though, gonna wait for the 8 series to go SLi again, and my 2405FPW is on the way . And yes, I'm gonna ebay this card when I can get a 7900GTX or woteva, so long as it's not another £100 added onto the price tag. 7800GTX 512MB = £500+ 7800GTX = £400 tops

and then there's the little spanner in the works, of a new mobo + extreme edition Presler after christmas

but now I have my monitor, I have to work up some money to get back into SLi, coz I cud have got 2 7800GTX 512MB's, but I wudn't have noticed it on my 17" tft so 2405 + 1 gfx card = no SLi, and I'll have to start saving for the 8 series

You do know that the Presler is simply a 65nm version of the current dual-core Intel processors, right? That means one memory controller and it's still NetBurst architecture . You may be able to get some higher clock speeds, but the overall performance gain will be minimal, since the 2 cores will be fighting each other for system memory. Conroe, Merom, and Woodcrest is where Intel is focusing on. Best wait until those come out before you upgrade.
