Yeah I know. Hopefully I'm wrong. I just distinctly remember reading that over at cgtalk b/c I instantly felt disappointed. I'm willing to bet though that vray may step up to the plate for 2011.

Yeah really. It's a crazy couple of months for us folks. Dozens of new app's and all this hardware hitting the street in such a short time period. There's no way I can afford to drop for everything "I'd like to get" at once. Going to just wait to see the specifics when all the app's come out before I make any purchasing decisions (I also have a mild cnc setup on the 'to get list', so that doesn't help).

An EVGA dually w/ 980's would be sexy as hell renderbox regardless. But w/ fermi about to drop (non quaddro cuda) & gpu accel'd rendering on the horizon (wether it comes out right now w/ 2011 or not, it's not far away), I think we're on the cusp of another leap for the viz/vfx industries. When a bunch of stuff like this comes together, it generally doesn't take people too long to squeeze the potential out of it, & raise the standard of work in the process.

Really exciting time, I just wish I had more money laying around lol.

Fermi is what I meant.. That will be a must for me at some point.. The other thing I find interesting is I really, truly think the 980 will be the high end 6 core. I bet money there is a cheaper entry level 6 core processor before Christmas.

Get more ram.

Max is a memory hog, the more you have, I find the less you crash...Usually crashes are caused by memory overflows...It takes a lot of operations to calculate a ton of geometry!

PS, it looks more and more like a career in ArchViz is not in my future, with outsourcing and everything else going on, I am having to put my time towards other, money making ventures...I SO MISS 3D!

Its also getting MUCH MUCH easier to do things in house. China can do it for super cheap and also with Revit being stupid easy to use, its just becoming more advantageous for firms to just do renderings themselves.

Yes vray will add CUDA. Vray already has a realtime CPU renderer but this same thing will be ported to GPU which will make things much much quicker.

I'm still working on the texture (If I ever finish that is) but I just felt like a quick render.

Actually the big addon to 3ds Max 2011 is Quicksilver.

Quicksilver Hardware Renderer-
Create high-fidelity pre-visualizations, animatics, and games-related marketing materials in less time with Quicksilver, an innovative new hardware renderer that helps produce high-quality images at incredible speeds. This new multi-threaded rendering engine utilizes both the CPU and the GPU, and supports alpha and z-buffer render elements; depth-of-field; motion blur; dynamic reflections; area, photometric, ambient occlusion, and indirect lighting effects along with precision adaptive shadow maps; and the ability to render at larger-than-screen resolutions.
