Rig to get me thru till mid 2007

Thread Starter
Hi all, im making a rig for christmas thats going to be $600-$650

Any suggestions to what ive already put together?

$233 CPU – AMD Athlon 64 3700+ 2.2GHz 1MB L2 Cache

$122 Mobo – ASUS A8N-SLI

$146 Memory – OCZ EL Platinum Revision 2

$60 PSU – Aspire 520W +12V@35A

$35 Case – XION II

$88 HD - Maxtor DiamondMax 200GB Serial ATA150 7200 RPM 16MB CACHE

Total=$684

But im looking to drop the price to around 600-650.

I already have my gpu and its a 6800GS PCIe.

Im a medium-heavy gamer.

Any suggestions would be nice.

Everything will be stock cooling for awhile, but i might consider a zalman hsf, later...

P.S. im going to moderately overclock, this being my first overclock

That looks fantastic! lol I think that is about as good as it's gonna get even sub $1000! The only things I would maybe skimp on would be the CPU, if you wanted you could get a A64 3200+ Venice for about 185 or so or the HDD you could get a nice 80GB Seagate Barracuda for abotu $50.....other than that I would just keep what you got if you can stretch your budget to fit it all in.

Im think im really going to need 1mb of L2 cache, because i use photoshop a lot and i encode video, plus everyone says it oc's really good.

Im probably going to change the hd to a Maxtor 16mb cache 7200rpm 150gb serial ATA 150, but my only concern with that is, will i get better performance with SATA2?

That's the same CPU I plan on getting for my new build... (see link in sig)
And I'm planning on getting a 6800GS too...

Well, I don't know if this is the case for wherever you live, but near me at either Staples (an office store) or Microcenter (computer store) they always have hard drives on sale, like the on I have now was only like $60 and it's a 160GB, which is more than a lot of people would ever need. And I saw a few days ago Staples had a sale for a decent 200GB HD for $40...

So I was just suggesting you look around stores for cheap prices on hard drives if you can, so you don't spend $100+ on something that's not all that much better.

Just a suggestion.

I really wish we had a computer store here, but i live out in the boondocks, its really pathetic.

But im looking for speed not capacity, mainly 16mb cache and 7200rpm.

Yeah, I was only suggesting the CPU and HDD as points to save a few bucks since they were the only things I personally would consider sacrificing, otherwise the San Diego is MUCH better than any Venice.

looks great. i would not skimp on anything just to save $30-80. leave it just like that, and in a few months buy another 6800GS and you'll be good for a long while.

Yea depends on if you want a motherboard for stability or overclockability.

Your board is a little bit of both, but only supports up to 1.55vcore. Which is a problem for new day san diego cores because most of the ones produced now need 1.6v+ for good overclocks. If you can get your hands on a early San diego like Transonic had, then you should have no probs, dunno just some blurbs.
