Best firewall to use? - Page 3

Just to throw my 2c in, I left my computer with absolutely no virus protection for about 6 months and had no problems with just the router as protection. Just keep in mind that *most* spyware type problems will still happen without proper protection. I currently use the MS spyware program and haven't had any issues.

And yes I do realize that I am simply repeating what others have already said, but I agree with you.

I'm using Tiny Personal Firewall 2005 Pro.
I think it's a good advanced firewall that gives you the possibility to limit any program's access to files, registry, services, devices etc...
I have been using it for years (older versions of course) and I have never had to install a spyware/adware remover. It's powerful enough if you take the time to correctly configure it.
The only con is that it's a bit time consuming at first.

If you want to check it out: www.tinysoftware.com

They have a free evaluation version that you can download.

If you want a comprehensive security solution, go with Zonealarm Security Suite. I have used it since way back and has come along way since then.

ZASS has evertyhing from Firewall, advanced program control, antivirus, anti-spyware, OSFirewall, web filtering, IM security, and more.

Unlike a router, a software firewall will give you OUTBOUND protection that many people overlook. IMHO outbound protection is just as important.

And the OSfirewall (operating system firewall) will protect against malicicious programs that try to modify system files and prevent rootkits from installing.

Zonealam is consistently the top firewall among professionals. No other firewall even comes close to Zonealarm Security Suite.

Just to let you know sir, zonealarm may have great promise, but it also causes some problems. For one, users of outlook express and zass will not be able to close outlook express. When you try to close it, the window is gone but the process still remains in task manager. On top of that, after opening and closing several times, several processes remain using 11MB each. Also the page file size cannot be changed with zass installed. I don't know why but it was bugging me forever until it finally fixed itself when I uninstalled zass. Maybe you won't have these problems but they caused enough trouble for me to leave zass behind forever.

?????

A properly configured firewall would prevent trojans from connecting to the internet. Why is outbound protection not needed. BTW Windows firewall does NOT have outbound protection.

Currently I have the issue of Winlogon.exe trying to connect to America's Most Wanted for whatever reason, but my Zonealarm is blocking it.

Software firewall will prevent untrusted programs from connecting to the internet, just like when Windows Explorer tries to connect to the intenet everytime you do something like search for a file on your hard drive.
