New build, dual processors or single?

Thread Starter
I am going to build an AMD computer, buget is tight... max is 550

I was thinking of 1 or 2 builds

#1
-----
$130 3000+ venice
$100 6600GT (possible SLi later)
$130 DFI LanParty nF4 SLI-D (the one Mr. Mumbles is selling)
$35 450w rosewill PSU (dual rails, 17A each)
$60 80 gig seagate HD

#2
-----
$120 2x240 opteron dual core CPU's @ 1.4GHz each (can get from a friend)
$100 6600GT (probably AGP depending on mobo i choose)
$60 80Gig seagate HD

Couple of questions,
1. do you think this Rosewill PSU will power rig #2?
2. Also do i need registered ram to run rig #2 or can i use regular unregistered ram?
3. which one would be better for gaming?

thanks

I'm going to agree. 1.4GHz is very low for stock. You would really need a great stepping to get mid 2GHz clocks. If your gaming I would probably go for a single core. With the 3000+ you'd have a better chance at getting mid/upper level overclocks.

yea, 1.4 is kinda weak, but what attracted my eye was dual core processor and i could get 2 of them for 120 (from a friend)

Sorry, I'm not very familiar with opterons.. When you say two are you referring to actually two pieces of hardware? Or just two cores?

EDIT: I'm a little confused now, so you could get 2 dual cores? I'm not sure, but it sounds liek that isn't skt 939 but I may be wrong..

As promised... WTG
1. I'm not to firmiliar with Rosewells...
I sugest getting on google and look for reviews.
My suggestion is a Sunbeam NUUO550, if you can find it, very popular and sold out quick, I'll be shopping for one very soon.

2-3. You do need regestered RAM for Opty 940 pin CPU(s)
The 940. are not all that bad for gaming but I'd get the 3000+ and have at it OCing
Why, the 240 is an 800MHz HTT pair of cores running 1400MHz each, twice the cache as the 3000+ but only supports DDR2700 and the X2 will only help you in programs with dual core coding.

For gaming go with a single. I think you forgot a couple of important things like memory, a case, power supply, etc.

the 240s are not dual core, they are 2-way. That means you can use up to two on a motherboard.
