I need an awesome computer on a budget

Read the title...Okay, so what I'm thinking about now is:

case/psu (already bought): forgot case name and stuff, 500 something watt psu
mobo/cpu: I'm thinking an ECS Socket 939 (k8t890 model if it helps) with a athlon 64 3800
memory: 2 sticks of corsair 1gb pc4200
video: PNY Geforce 7800gt
hdd: Western Digital 200gb (may get another for RAID 0)
sound: probably audigy 2 zs gamer edition
optical: I have a DVD+/-RW drive laying around
keyboard: hopefully saitek gaming keyboard/command pad but if not, the a Zboard
mouse: laser gaming mouse

Total: around $1200 (I'll get the mobo/cpu at Fry's and the rest off the internet.

Don't get the 3800, go w/3700 (it has 1mb l2cache, same core as FX series, would easily OC to 2.4ghz and outperform the 3800) Also I'd suggest going with a different board, newegg has chaintech VNF4 ultra for around 70$ shipped, not sure how much it'd be at fry's. Other than that it looks like a good build. Good luck!

Thanks. What's different between the chaintech and the ECS that I have listed. I'm guessing that ECS is an off-brand, but it was the cheapest one they had, and it had enough PCI slots, it had PCI-Express, and it looked like it would be fairly good.

ECS is great if you want to run stock. For overclocking it doesn't have many options.
Not bad at all...

Ah. I see.
Actually, I was wondering whether I should get the dual core athlon (x2) instead of a single core. This is going to be mainly a gaming computer. I've heard that the extra core makes it run faster all around, but do you think it's worth the extra hundred bucks or so?

You will need an OS to complete that rig.

I can get whatever OS I want. I have a subscription to MSDN where I can get any and all programs (games not included) that Microsoft makes. I'm thinking Media Center Edition though. We have a spare TV tuner so I'll use that in my system too.
I just got a case for it today. TigerDirect had a pretty cool looking case with a 500W PSU for $40 after rebates. That alone cut $90 off of my build (I was going to get a $130 case with a 500W PSU).
In case you're wondering about the monitor I'm getting, we have several, so I'll probably be using a 17 inch LCD until I save up for a new one.

A few members have had great results OCing with the Chaintech VNF4 Ultra and it's under $70 at newegg.
On the PS... don't go by the "watt" rating alone...
The 12v+ rail is a good indicator of it's ability. 24a minimum, for a system with a card like you seek

Okay. Tonight I bought the motherboard and cpu. I can't use it now because the case isn't in, but I ended up getting the ECS mobo, the 3200 CPU (socket 939), I'm going to cannibalize 512mb of RAM until I can get my own, I have a crappy video card that will be history once i get my 7800gt, and I have 2 hard drives (one is a 4gb that I will use for boot/os and the other is a 20.5gb) until I get a better one (hopefully for Christmas). I'm using a NEC LCD monitor (17 inch?) until I save up for one, but I'm not in a hurry.

If you are going to get a dual core, do not install MCE as they have issues with each other. We had a machine in at work for like 2 weeks as it hung anythime you tried to record with MCE and pulling the X2 out fixed it.
