Need some memory advice....

Thread Starter
I posted a question in the Intel Mobo area and got some great advice on what to pick...

I am upgrading to:

- Intel 640
- Asus P5WD2 Premium

I'd like to put in 2GB of ram, or 1GB of really good ram and add another in a few months...

Price is flexible, say around $400 ish (or less )

Thanks!

Corsair PC5400UL

Have a look @ http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews/DDR2review/
Quote:
What’s interesting about these sticks is that Corsair have validated them at 3-2-2-8 @2.1v and 665Mhz which is very fast for DDR2
On a lighter note... why not order the P630 processor which only differs from the 640 by having a 200MHz slower clock speed. You can then overclock it since the mobo you ordered is very nice.
I know, the price difference between 630 and 640 is kind of marginal but still you will be paying less.

Thanks for the advice...but the 5400UL modules only come in 512MB, I'm really looking for 2 sticks at 1GB each (unless I can put 2 of these pairs in the P5WD2? Hmmmm)

I already ordered the 640 & P5WD2, got an OK deal on them...

I have 2 choices, buy some memory that I'll replace later or wait....

Suggestions??

Thx

Well when your overclocking, from what I've heard 1GB sticks don't oc as well as 512 sticks. I heard someone use the analogy that a fat guy won't win a marathon lol. 1GB sticks are fat guys, and known to usually not oc as well. You'd probably get a better oc with 4 good matching 512's running dual channel. I've never tried to oc 1GB sticks, but that's just what I've read.

OK...haven't heard from anyone who thought going to 4 sticks of 512 would be good/bad soooooo..

Which would be a good choice:

OR am I better off with 5-5-5-12 or 4-4-4-12
Thanks!!!

You're better off with timings such as 4-4-4-12 than 5-5-5-12.
The tighter the timings the better the ram module performance.

However, if you plan on oc'ing by substantially raising your FSB (which I assume is your case since you're getting a very nice mobo) it means you will have to relax your ram timings to be able to squeeze the extra juice from it.

According to a lot of knowledgeable people on this forum, Intel seems to love bandwidth (contrary to their AMD counterparts which prefer tight ram timings).
An intel system with ram timings as relaxed as 4-4-4-11 with FSB set to 240 should perform better than a system with timings as low as 3-3-3-8 with FSB 200.

So you need to get ram modules with initial timings that are kind of tight in order for you to remain in an acceptable range once you relax them a little to take your oc further.

Ah ehm... hello, is this thing on?? Testing 1,2,3.....

Thats kinda what I said I thought, 4 512's seems to be be better than 2 1GB's from what I've heard when your overclocking.

Thanks for the advice on the timings...
