DreamSpark is simple; it's all about giving students Microsoft professional-level developer and designer tools
at no charge so you can chase your dreams and create the next big breakthrough in technology - or just
get a head start on your career.

It does work you just have to provide them with a valid school email, my College one worked great. You are able to download lots of different types of software including Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition.

And so begins MS trying to compete with Linux on the student level. Personally, I wouldn't run a windows server to save my life, but this is definitely an interesting development.

They're really trying to compete with the OSS community. Too bad they'll never really meet the same level of expectations.

You would if you were part of any corporate IT department in the entire world and had to run a domain and exchange servers.

Well, for one, I'm not, and nor will I ever be.

And as far as I know, internet protocols are OS independent, so..... yeah.

For once, I'd love to see an articulated response that doesn't use 'fanboy' as the easy escape to an argument. Windows cannot meet the expectations of the Linux community. Fact. Until MS ditches the registry, starts using package management, and allows the use of different GUI's rather than the standard Windows UI, it can't offer what Linux offers.

Windows domains are not internet protocols. A windows domain is a way to facilitate the use of many computers by authorized users, with the ability to have the user's account accessible from any computer within the domain. So basically any large business or school uses a windows domain.

The cool thing about this free server 08 is it will allow students to make their own domain controllers and they will be able to experiment like crazy and not have to worry about angry bosses wondering why their computer doesn't let them log in

he is saying that other OSes other than just windows can be used to perform this function. internet standards are open and not restricted by microsoft.

anyways, this has been going on for more than a year...
