3200 or 146 Opteron?

Thread Starter
Well, Im trying to decide whether or not to get a 3200 Venice or 146 Opteron. I am stuck because the Opteron doesnt have any L1 Cache, but has 1mb L2 (double that of the Venice). I am going to be gaming and video encoding a lot.

Please make your suggestions and any reasons to back them up please. Thanks!

The Opteron 1xx has 128Kb L1 cache 64/64 for Data/Code.

Of the two the Opteron will be a better choice, so long as you know that it is unsupported in most 939Skt MBs

Was looking to put it in a DFI nf4 Ultra-D....

Know of any issues with that?

btw - I was just assuming it didnt have any L1 Cache because they didnt mention any on pricegrabber.com nor on the official AMD site.

Have a read here AMD do show a 128Kb L1 cache

The DFI will be more than capable of running this CPU, although they do not oficially support it.

I've got an Ultra-d and an Opteron and it's fine, using bios 623/3.
If the CPU has L2 cache then it has L1 cache as well, and, as NCSA has mentioned has the same amount as a normal San Diego CPU.

Awesome, your the man I was looking HERE!!!

Now, if only I can find one in the $170 price range thats in stock!!! Everybody with that price is out of stock, only ones in stock I see are $200.... Any suggestions?

btw - Quick guesstimate, what do you think I can OC either of them to with stock cooling (at first)... then big typhoon later on? Stable of course and with TCCD RAM and Ultra-D mobo...

edit - Stepping will probably be a newer one of course not the good ole' boys lol

Well you will need to be quick or know someone who is on the server side of the industry as these Opterons are getting harder to source for the general user....

As for an OC on Stock cooling, pending Chip ability, prob. 2.7-2.8... the extra cooling will help take you further. The low Vcore also helps keep temps down so easier to manage.

Not many suggestions for getting them less than $200. If you can wait, there should be a new batch released by AMD in the new year, if not you might have to take the plunge. Still a great price for the performance.
With regards to the speed, it really does depend on the stepping you receive. I'd estimate, unless you're very unlucky, that you'd probably get 2.7-2.8Ghz out of it with a good mobo and psu.
