7800gtx overclocking help

Thread Starter
I've been reading through the threads and there really doesn't seem to be a lot about overclocking a 7800 card. What i'm really looking for is reducing a card that's already been modified.

I have a buddy who purchased a SLI system with two 7800GTX cards and they were preconfigured and overclocked for him. Now the system seems to freeze up a lot so he's asking me if I can reduce the clock on it since he's read around that the 7800 is unstable when overclocked. So, i need to know what to look for and what I need. I'm going to assume that the OCing has been done through the bios, what utils do i need to set this thing back to factory or to fix its freezing problems?

Coolbits or nvtweak at guru3d.com
And install and lower clocks on card.

Before you lower the clocks on the cards, how are you sure it's the video cards? Have you troubleshooted the system at all?

You make a good point, I haven't done anything on the machine yet. I'm more familiar with CPU overclocking than video card so I just want to make sure I have all my bases covered. Am leaning towards the video card mostly because it only freezes up while in games. Also, given the system was basically purchased this way with a lot of stuff OC'd i'll probably have to end up taking everything back to defaults and working on one thing at a time.

post your friend's entire rig.

before you underclock the gfx cards I would try new drivers

there may be an issue with the PSU with 2 7800GTX's
also, what mobo does he have, mine for example needs an extra power cord plugged into it to run stable in sli mode. Even though I am currently only running one card I figure it can't hurt so I have it plugged in anyway.

does the computer freeze in one game or several?

Playing a video game taxes a system a lot and is where you'll usually find problems if there are any. Look at his cpu temps, motherboard temps, ram temps, etc. If you don't wanna bother checking all these, at least take a general look at airflow. Does he have front intake and rear exhaust? Tossing an extra side intake fan couldn't hurt and shouldn't be much hassle. Freezing while gaming usually comes down to 1 of 2 things....overheating or power supply. That's what I'd look at before I lowered any clock speeds.

Its all lies - I've got my 7800GTX happy at 490/1300.

Mine's at 500/1320. I've never heard of instability with 7800s. They're very good OCers.

Hmmmm, , , If thats what he "Bought" Somewhere I would take it back and demand they fix it . . .

Also what you describe is more akin to a heat issue or PSU , but looking at the specs you should not have a heat or power issues ever ..Almost sounds to good to be true reading those specs. . .
