internet just dies, in mid use?!

Ok I have winxp sp2, with onboard lan on my nf3 board..

I also have a d-link router thats like a year old..

Anyways, I was surfing the net, when all the sudden a site didn't load.. So I hit my home button to see if google works.. Sure enough it dosen't.. then aim loses connection and I say "damn internets down"

run upstairs.. Dads computer has internet.. ***..

So I reboot.. same thing..

I check my ip.. Its now some crazy ip "169.254.227.198" with subnet of "255.255.0.0"
Which is VERY weird since usually my ip is somthing along the lines of 192.168.0.100, or 101, or 102 or somthign..

So I manualy enter in the ip, reboot, and try everything from 100-106.. NONE work...

Now usually in this case, i'd give up and format.. BUT I just formated, 3 days ago! And I spent a little over 2 hours last night getting windows back to how I had it 3 days before, before I formated...

Anyone have any ideas? It seems strange my ip would suddenly change to "169.254.227.198"..

both our other 2 pc's on the network work, and have the normal ip.. And so does my xbox.. ***?!@

I do believe the 169. " " . "" . "" ip address means that there is something wrong with your ethernet on your computer. Maybe try reinstalling the drivers for your ethernet.

isn;t 169. . . . mean its a router. K go reboot your router. Take the power cord out for a few seconds and plug it back in. Then see if that works may have to reset the ips or something. Then try unplugging ur modem then pluggin it back in a few seconds later. If all this fails call up your isp and they may just have to add your computer to the network as mine does sometimes.

What ISP do you have?? not that it really matters... The issue you are having is due to IP address that your router is asigning, or rather the lack there of... Heres how it should work. You plug in your modem---->it connects to your ISP and gets an IP it can give to ONE computer---->you plug your router in---->it connects to the modem and says "They Im a computer and i need an IP"---->The modem, not knowing if its a router or a computer gives the router the ONE ip it has to give out----> the router is all like "w00t! i got an IP now i can give internal IPs to all that ask for one" (up to 254 computers)---->You boot your computer---->It asks your router for an IP---->Router gives one to your computer!.... Now your online. In your situation the router did not give your computer an IP so the computer made one up. 169.x.x.x is the windows default IP. Now why your router didnt give out an IP or why the computer lost it in the first place is the real question here... I would first suggest a firmware update for the router.
Do all your computers loose the IP at the same time or just one? any firewall that could be causing issues?

Click the "Start" button and click on "Run", in the box type this without the quotes, "ipconfig /flushdns" and try to connect to the internet. See if that helps.

Well whatever it was, it was somthing to do with my motherboards onboard lan..

I reinstalled motherboard drivers, formated, reinstalled drivers again.. Nothing..

Power cycled modem + router + all pc's in house many times, reset router.. Everything..

Put a old nic card in my pci slot, installed drivers for it, and I have internet again..
