Great job for answering your own question

Here's what I would have attempted to do:
1. create network with same name on both computers
2. allow sharing of the folder(s) you want shared.
3. on 2000 comp, add userID of profile on winXP as authorized user
4. cross fingers and pray that it works

OR.... just connect both computers to a router and enable sharing on both hardrives. Voila! Both computers connected and you can transfer files between the two. Oh by the way, make sure they are part of the same workgroup also.

1. open up your network conntections folder
2. right click on the local area connection and selected propties
3. selected internet protocol (TCP/IP) and press propties
4. change obtain an ip address auto to use following ip address
5. ip address on winxp to 192.168.0.2 (or whatever your router is config ip address DHCP) submask to 255.255.255.0
6. to get the gateway go to start->run->cmd and type "ipconfig" and somethink like this should come up
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.4
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
7. grap the gateway and put it into default gateway
8. now on the win2k just do the same as above but just use 192.168.0.3 and subnet 255.255.255.0

then that should work i think
