USB, or E-Sata?
Plugged directly into PC, No hubs?
Tried different ports?
Different cables?
Powered hub?
Western Digital Elements 1TB I assume has it's own power brick?
What the heck is E-HDD? (External Hard drive)
If it's E-Sata sometimes you have to go into the Raid/Sata manager.. Be careful there because if you pick the wrong option, it may initialize the drive.
(I have one machine that IF say I remove power to drive while in the OS- I'll have to reboot (duh as it's E-Sata)... and upon boot I sometimes have to go into the Raid/Sata configuration utility and re-configure it...This said it sounds like the Os is "sort-of" seeing it...)
If it's USB.... Several years ago I had another device... the fix was to go into the registry and delete all references on the USB bus and let the OS re-detect the device.
Above is said with of course going into disk management once drive is recognized and assigning a drive letter to it.
Radom thoughts:
#1 DISABLE your Internet Security Suite if you have one... I had a problem the other day with Comodo and a USB flash drive in which I accidentally dismissed a security prompt... and the drive would not install...
#2 Check WD's site for firmware /reported problems.
#3 The drive could be going bad (I know you hate to hear that....)
If it's NEW... remember just because it's NEW, doesn't mean it's "Good".
#4 How old is that drive again?
#5 What is the EXACT MODEL NUMBER of the DRIVE? (Please post- Helps others)
#6 REMOVE ALL USB DEVICES (Unplug physically from bus)... re-try
#7 Run a FULL scandisc on machine that will see the drive, selecting correct errors, then do a full defrag... MFT may have some errors. (That's bad news for your DATA)
