Actually....no, they are not. pandapimp's old alienware had 2 6600GTs in SLI paired with an AMD 4000+ and my X800XL and P4 3.0 at STOCK consistently whooped it in games, although his Alienware did score about 500 points higher in 3D Mark 05.

a pair of 6600GT's will play any game on the market today with everything maxed. because of only having 128mb of RAM they are limited when playing higher resolutions (usually above 1024x768 or 1280x1024) Even a single 6600GT will play games beautifully. My SLI'd 6600GT's ran COD2 with everything on max wonderfully.

right now the best performance/money card is the 6800GS. it performs on par with the 6800GT, it can OC quite well and it only costs about 200-215.

The x800gto may run faster than the 6600GT, but you need to keep in mind that the ati card only runs shader model 2.0, while the nvidia card is running shader model 3.0 which looks much better. So there is a significant reason why in some games the gto out performs the gt... but the gt looks much better.

here, you can take a look at a comparison bt/wn all the cards here:
