I'm sorry but I doubt you'll get very far [in the BIOS] with that mobo/CPU combination. All of MSI's NF4 boards suffer from what's been dubbed the "219 bug" that keeps you from o/cing past a certain HTT speed (usually 219 Mhz but sometimes a bit higher). It only attacks Winchester CPU's, namely the CBBID stepping. I've got that problem, and there's been quite the stink raised at MSI's forums about it. Your best bet would be to set your memory to 166 and boot to Windows. Then use Clockgen to overclock and see where it'll take you. The CPU's are usually pretty good at overclocking, however, making up to about 2.6 Ghz pretty easily. But due to the BIOS issue it can be tough to make it stable above that.

I'd be willing to bet this is your issue, and I'm sorry to say I doubt MSI will ever fix it. Winchesters are old news and they're not going to spend the time to fix it for us few users that are still stuck on Winny's. Like I said, though, using Clockgen you'll probably get it to around 2.6 Ghz depending on your memory.

Yeah, all of MSI's NF4 boards' PCI busses are locked from the factory.

To pinhead. That is kind of lame! i thought this thing was a perfect combination. anyway i will try and see like you said, if i hit a wall, 2.6 is ok with me, at least its some increase. when you say HTT at 219 MHZ is that the fsb? sorry im really newb at this, i am running 2.2 GHZ right now, with a 3.3% votls increase and its stable! at ram 166.

Edit, sorry for the dumb HTT question, it is FSB but im at 245 and its fine, if it only went to 219 yuo wouldnt even hit 2.0 ghz? sorry i guess i dont understand the wall your talkin about :S

edit, thanks for the PCI help.

edit, thanks for the PCI help.

I thought so, too! When I bulit my computer the Winchesters were overclocking like mad on DFI's and Asus's. The MSI was cheaper and got good reviews, so I grabbed it.

HTT=FSB.
HTTxCPU Multipler=CPU Speed

Don't forget about the HT Multiplier. It goes from 5x to 1x (or 2.5x depending on your BIOS version). If you go above 250 Mhz HT then you'll want to set this to 3x. At 289 Mhz HT (or FSB), using the 3x multy, the HTT bus is running at 867 Mhz. Just keep that value as close to 1000 as you can (though it's not THAT important. Just keep it below 1000).

I'm pretty confident that if your RAM can go up to 245 Mhz you'll hit 2.6 Ghz pretty easily.

Edit: It's called the '219 bug' because it usually shows up at 219 Mhz. I say usually because it's been higher before. And some say that changing the HT multy from 5 to 3 solves the issue (though not with my CPU/Board/RAM combination) so you may be luckier than I! If you have the bug, the system simply will not boot. No matter what memory settings or CPU multipliers you run, it won't POST. Hopefully you got a lucky chip!

I don't think I could explain it any better than this:

I know, I know, it's from a different forum... But it explains a LOT.

ive known about the 1:1 thing because of my intel, but i dont see that as an option on the MSI and im wondering if putting my ram down to 166 is changing the ratio. and if so, is it hurting performance? would it be bad to put the ram to 133 or does it not matter if it ends up running a little over ddr400?

Edit-Also, do i ever want to change the cpu/fsb ratio?

Edit - Further on the ram, why not just by ddr500 or whatever and run it at 1:1, ddr400 and never worry about it?

Since you've only got a 9x multiplier, I wouldn't change it. If you do get better ram that can run faster, by all means, go for it. Beware, however, that Winchester CPU's memory controllers don't work well above about 150 mhz. So in order for you to get the best performance, you'll want to run your memory on 166 or lower, depending on how high you can get your memory. So if you were to run 1:1 with that chip, you won't ever get above 250x9 which is 2250 mhz. I'm willing to bet your chip can go way further than that. Putting the ram on the 166 divider will get you right around 300 mhz which I'm guessing would be pretty close to the top end for the chip.

So if I were you, I'd set the ht multy to 3 the CPU multy to 9 and the RAM divider to 166 and see how far you can go.

Great, thanks for all your help. I wanted the OCZ platninum revision 2 dual channel kit for both mine and my brothers comp, now im thinking about looking into some pc3700 or whatever it is, i think that would be a smarter choice than going ddr400 but still not sure. Again thanks for the help bro.
