Geil Ram Confusion

Thread Starter
hello all,

I have GeIL 1GB (2x512MB) PC4400 UltraX-TCCD CAS2.5 Ram, and on my Asus mobo have set the Meclock timing to 400Mhz which I think i equivalent to a 1:1 FSBram ratio. It is at 2.5-3-3-7

My CPU is running at 267Mhz with 10x multiplier, and my ram running at the same.

So, what type of ram am i running.

i ask this as when I go onto erverst home edition and benchmark the ram it comes out as PC4300, and i am not sure what this means, as on the Geil website it states my Ram can doo PC3200, PC4000 and PC4400.

Hope you can help

Thanks in advance!

Everest is telling you what speed the RAM is currently runng at.

yes, the Asus boards label the memory dividors a little bit differently than most other mobo manufactures. So if you leave the max mem clock at 400 and you OC you are using a 1:1 dividor. So if your htt is set at 267 your RAM is also running at 267Mhz or 534Mhz effective. So, your RAM is currently running at DDR534 speeds.

i think I kind of get that..

Are you saying that I am curently running at PC4300, and my max is PC4400

What do you mean by the 267/534 and DDR534 bit?

Sorry if these questions sound a bit stupid!

thanks

When you overclock your ram, the rating will increase, don't worry everthing is fine, just means you have some good ram.

well when you overclock your cpu your RAM gets overclocked as well.

your cpu is at 11x200 by default so it runs at 2.2Ghz. however you changed the multi to 10x and the htt to 267 so your processor is running at 10x267 or 2.67Ghz. That is a 470Mhz overclock. I'm sure that that makes sense.

alright... now when you overclock at a 1:1 ratio your memory increases just as much as your processor. (well not really but kinda) so as you increase your htt (yours is at 267) you overclock your RAM. because your htt is normally set to 200 (DDR = dual data rate so 200 is effectivly doubled, that's how you get DDR400) so since your htt is overclocked by 67Mhz your RAM is also overclocked by 67Mhz. however, since it's DDR you double the overclock to get the effective frequency. so 267Mhz is DDR534.

I hope that makes sense... if not, let me know and I'll try again.

oh i see. Thanks a lot for that. I really appreciate you helping me....i guess its the way we all learn.

Just one last question, so if im running under PC4400, does that mean in underclocking?

If i run HTT frequency at lets say 280, that would mean im running at PC4480. Would that be overclocking memory.

Thanks

well... I can never remember the number.... I know that DDR400 is PC3200, I think DDR500 is PC4000 and is DDR600 PC4400? I think that's right.

so yes, if your RAM is rated at DDR600 or PC4400 then your RAM is currently uncerclocked. It won't be overclocked until you go past a htt of 300 (DDR600)

it's your choice what you want to do, you can leave it as is and try to tighten up your timings, or you can try to put your cpu multi down to 9 and raise the htt some more...

but before you do that I suggest you test the limits of your htt and cpu.
