RAM OC Confusion

Thread Starter
Ok I'm a little confused.

My mobo's fsb could OC to about 300 mhz.
My processors max multipliyer is 10.
Now I've got to check how much I should raise my voltage to OC .. but the confusing part for me is the RAM OC'ing.

I've got PC 3200. Basicly their 200 mhz (x2). So how can I raise my fsb and keep my ram stable when my stock fsb is 200mhz ?

Sure you can, you just have to run the ram on a divider, say a 2:1 divider, so when you are at your mobo's max of 300FSB (probably going to have to drop that CPU multi to x9 with a 3000 Venice) your RAM will be running at DDR 150. If you want it to be as close as possible to the stock speed I would suggest a 3:2 ratio if your mobo supports this because you will have exactly DDR400 at the 300FSB.

Ah, now that you say it, I understand what I read . Yay, learned more today .

Where can I change the divider ? In the bios ?

On my 3200+ 64bit s939, will I have to lower my multipliyer ?
I guess running on 3ghz would be kind of a lot.
Wonder what voltage will be needed and what heat it'll produce.

There should be an option in the bios with ram settings. I forget the name but it differs between motherboard makers. Look under frequences Also look for 1:1 or ram Freq. If there is a place to change it from Auto to 400 to 333 thats also the place to set the divider. with pc 3200 it will be 400 witch is 1:1 333 is 2:1 and so on.

333 is 2:1??? hardly! 2:1 is DDR200, allow me 'splain. 2:1 refers to a FSB : DRAM ratio. FSB being your Front Side Bus or the thing that is default of 200 for the layman DRAM being your RAM speed. Also called SPD. When you set this ratio you are basically telling your BIOS what speed you want your RAM to run at relative to your FSB speed. So a 1:1 ratio means the BIOS will tell the RAM to run at whatever speed the FSB is at, at stock the FSB is 200 so the RAM will run at 200MHz or DDR400. With a 2:1 the RAM will run at half of your FSB speed and at stock that will be 100MHz or DDR200, hope this helped and wasn't too confusing!

if you haven't touched your computer settings yet, and you plan on just magically bumping all your gear up, i suggest that you think different. you need to take it in steps. you could quite possibly overclock your FSB as well as your CPU if you just work with it.

I'm not going to jump from 200mhz to 300mhz . I'm going to go step bt step .. what makes me unsecure is how to make the ram speed going at a reasonnable clock. But i'll figure it out.

if you are unsure, well even if you are sure you should run memtest before booting into windows when you oc your RAM. Always check for stability. Plus, memtest will tell you the timings and the frequency that you RAM is operating at.

I can't remember the website, but just google memtest and it will come up.
