Folding with GPU's

Thread Starter
How come they dont release a folding prog that uses GPU's because it is a well known fact that GPU's are becoming mor powerful that ur CPU so if u had someone with Dual 7800GTX(SLI) and a 3700+ for instance then u could get some serious folding done while these components are not being used... I understand that there are a number of C++ libraries out there that u can program a GPU with so as to do fast calculations. Opinions anyone?

They're incapable of many calculations. They're designed for a specific purpose. Why do you think your video card is reliant on your cpu?

Sorry i didnt recall saying that my GPU was reliant on my CPU i was just saying that i nthought you could get calculations done much quicker by using GPU's as well.

Nope, gpus are incapable of certain mathematical calculations and that's why they're reliant on the cpu. Btw, you didn't say they were, I did =)

i thought he was saying they should make a new version that splits up the job task part of the job goes to the gpu (that being the calculations it can do) and the other part to the cpu ( that being what calculations the gpu cant do) atleast thats how i took it i dunno

Its incapable of the calculations that CPU's do.. Processors = CISC/RISC.. GPU's = ... Something...

Weird.. But they would have to build the program from nearly scratch.. And "leaked documnet".. Err I dont particularly buy that..
