SM3 or not ?

Hi there again,

I thought I had my upgrade all worked out (dependant on availablity of components in Shanghai).

but

I can not decide if the Shader Model 3 is a feature I will really require over the next say 18-24 months till another upgrade.

Will it really be that much of an advantage ?

Will the gamming packages suffer from not possesing it ?

I am somewhat restricted to a budget and am currently looking at AMD 64 4000+SD on a crossfire motherboard (still deciding on manufacturer/model)with X850XT crossfire master and a X800GTO2(wife gave the nod for the second card, but I guess i'll pay for it later LOL) and some of the new G.SKILL 2x1024MB modules

but

The SM3 thing is nagging me, to which I would most likely go the same CPU on a EPOX SLi with a 7800GT maybe stretch to another if I use my existing CORSAIR TCCD.

Please help me out with some opinion's and not just suggesting the blind sheep mentality of AMD 64 X2 with nf4 SLi and 7800GTX, because it is the popular choice at the moment. (not that it is a bad choice, I just prefer what I prefer). Please stick to my choices.

cheers..and be happy not mad !

Just a quick question, why are you getting the 4000 over the 3700 if you're on a budget? You'll get the same OC with the 3700 and can use that money elsewhere. As far as SM3 being an "advantage", it doesn't affect performance, it's a graphic thing. Do a quick google and you can see several screenshots of games comparing with and without. There aren't many games that support it, so you'll probably end up looking at the same few games in the reviews.

Well i guess you should wait for the SM3 as upcoming games will use this option... upgrading your system to one that will be outdate in a couple of months/year will be a bit useless

This is what I am trying to figure out. What degree of performance will the Shader Model 3 offer.

what are you thinking about getting? sm3 is available in most vid cards except ati x800 series. the 6800gs is a great choice for the $200 range and then you have your 7800 series.

im guessing within 18-24 months you will wish youhad sm3 and likely something else we havent even heard of yet.

My options are in the first post. My uncertainty on the improvment the SM3 will make in gamming as opposed to GPU's without is proving hard to quantify.

Thanks for the input

it isnt speed as sccr said it is visual, sm3 actually loses fps but raises quality. since ati has adopted it as well you can assume some games will just look a little better in the gen. i would really stay away from buying two cards at once, go 7800 series or x1800 if you prefer ati, or gto2 for a 6-12 months budget card, it does very nicely. just dont set yourself up with two soon to be outdated cards for the next two years.

gpu
SM3 over next few months wil start to be used more and more . Most of the newer games coming out now use it. If your upgrading now it would be a good time to get a gpu with it . The 6800 gs is a great card at a great price especially if your looking at a sli setup later .But the 7800gt is a fantastic card ant if the budget allows it this would be the best buy.

cpu

With This i would go for the 3700+ not the 4000+ even a 3800 x2 should be in your range. But if you wnt to stay S/C the the 3700+ with some good a/c will give you 4000+ speeds and higher. I have a 3700+ clawhammer running stable now at 2720mhz

Thanks for the comments.
My need to have the latest and greatest is not a concern as you can see by my present use of the socket A. I just want to be in the game.

Looks like I still can't decide as I have not seen personally any of the games running SM3 to compare against.

I am really keen to give the crossfire a chance and X1800's would be fantastic but two of them would be a little to much for my budget. Hence the X850 and the X800GTO2.

I like the option of the 7800GT's as they only a little behind the 7800GTX (256MB that is ) and way lower in the price range.

Aaaargh why so many options to choose from...it's hard for a Gemini..LOL

Keep the opinions rollin' in.
