eXtreme Power Plus 600W?

Thread Starter
Are these good or not? For a dual GPU - gtx295, 4870X2, 5870X2(when it comes out) - and a Phenom II 100~140W cpu? One HDD and thats about it.

It's only 70% on efficiency, which is pretty bad.

You'd be better off with a more efficient PSU like a Corsair or OCZ.

You never want to skimp on the PSU. If it goes, it can take other components with it.

The 4870x2 is currently the card with the highest level of power consumption, I believe, at almost 370 watts, assuming that the 5870x2 does not pull more than this, as it probably won't bc a single 5870 is more efficient than its 4870 counterpart, you should probably look for a higher power PSU. In the specifications it lists that it has two 18 amp 12v rails, meaning that it can supply 432 watts of power at 12 volts, more than enough to cover a single graphics card of any caliber (assuming they don't come out with an x4 =D), but wait! You still need to supply the CPU with power, which also draws from the 12v rails. Assuming that the your CPU is pulling only 100 watts and the rest of your system is only pulling another 50 that would leave your poor 5870x2 with only 282 watts of power. It is unlikely though that the GPU will pull this lowly amount of power.
Here's my logic: The 5870 pulls about 188 watts for the whole board, assuming that no new silicon or data channels are added to the x2 (ie the only thing added is an additional core) then the power draw would be 298 watts (bc the draw of one 5870 core is 110 watts at load, see links) which would put you over our previously calculated max.

Instead of getting the eXtreme Power, I would consider the following:

Its probably one of the worst branded PSU's around. I would suggest u stay away from it. Even a vx450 would be a better option.

I wouldn't use it for dual GPU's..... I'm using it with a single 9800GT in one of my builds.

It's a piece of crap 350W unit. The 500W version can't do 275W without dying.

Don't use it. And it's better to start a new thread than to necro an old one. What's with this aversion to starting new threads everyone has? You're only taking up like 10bytes more on the server, big deal.

Yes it will handle a single 5850, mines be going great for almost a year now and no problems with it. But take a look at seasonic or corsair.
