RAM price vs quality?

Thread Starter
i have been looking at upgrading my Ram to 2GB, pc3200 ddr / 400mhz.
but have noticed a significant variation in prices.
how much difference in quality could there be between :

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-1GB-PC-320...QQcmdZViewItem

and :http://www.crucial.com/store/partspe...LE=CT12864Z40B

or:http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Product...9&GroupID=1116

i am on a low budget, but don't want to end up with the wrong Ram that wont do the job i need it for. which is primarily Gaming- Cod 2 / BF2 etc.

It really depends on your budget, what you want etc. If your mad keen on benchmarking etc then you'll want low latency, expensive ram. If you're just a casual user, then fairly cheap ram will suffice. If you play a lot of games, you'll notice a reasonable difference for getting ram that is low latency, but it really boils down to what you need it for.
EDIT: Sorry missed the part at the bottom of your post, you'll see a few FPS difference in games between expensive and cheap ram, but for newer games, you'd be better off with 2GB of slowish ram as opposed to 1GB of low latency expensive stuff. Hope that helps

Well, better RAM will overclock better, so you dont want to go with chepo RAM. I would get this or, if you want 1 GB sticks, this.

I wouldn't trust the performance of the one in the first link. The brand is not given and the latencies (such as the CAS is not specified).

Between the second (crucial) and third (ocz) link I would go for the ocz as they have a cas latency of 2 whereas the crucial module has a cas latency of 3.
Not to forget the ocz modules have a Gold heatsink. This material is a good heat conductor (almost half-way between Aluminum and Copper).

he has a 200w psu and ati 9000 in his sig so it is safe to NOT recommend any high end ram unless a new rig is on the way.

He's getting a new system. It's in another post, but yes, if that was the case then i'd agree

okay,
......... i see there could be a difference in performance between "cheap/slow" and "expensive/fast" , but suspect this difference to be fairly small compared with the initial difference that i will gain from going up to 2gb from 512mb.
also i don't want to go too silly with my Ram, if my Cpu is (effectively) a bottleneck.
............am i even close?

Jaz, i am putting a Antec 550w tp Psu, and a Leadtek 6600gt, and a Creative s/b Live!, in this week.
the Ram will hopefully match that kind of upgrade.

...great replies, thanks guys.

Yep, I'd agree with that. You will see a nice difference in games with expensive ram, but if you're on a budget, I'd go mid range. The cheap stuff off ebay I'd avoid as it looks a tad dodgy.

Crucial seems to be quite reputable, i might go that route, still need to shop about though, could do with a real bargain, might wait 'til New Year.
