Build a comp now or wait for socket M2?

Thread Starter
Well, im kind of in a tight spot, because the rig im on now is slow as hell.

And i have $800 in the bank.

I was thinking of making a system (specs in sig) after christmas (early jan) but i had second thoughts because i read an article at AnandTech

So, should i wait it out for Socket M2, or just buy now?

I would get the stuff now, becuase 800 bucks, i dout will be enough to build a new comp with M2. Just upgrade to socket 939 and a good video card.

I agree, buy now, because s939 is going be able to play all the latest games for a while to come. Try to grab a dual core or something like that to keep you in busniess for some time to come. And for 800 bux, you could build a very nice rig

Your delay may behoove you if you opt for an Opty CPU... they are said to be shipping again in mid January.
Nice config you have there! That should do very well

if you have a limited budget it would probably be best to stick with socket 939.

M2 would be more future proof, but it will cost more, and you'll have to buy new RAM too.

I'm hoping to upgrade to M2, but I'm going to wait till spring or early summer. I graduate in may so I need to get a job. hmm.. I'm so not ready to leave the college life though.

M2 won't really be an improvement at first. The only difference between M2 and 939 is the upgrade to DDR2 memory and a newer processor core manufactured with a new process that is smaller than 90nm. DDR2-533 proved to be a step backward and DDR2-667 is about on par with DDR400, so it won't be faster than 939 until DDR2-800 becomes the norm.
