switching to AMD, what CPU?

Thread Starter
Just got through reading many FAQs about AMD cpus and decided my next rig will have an AMD cpu not an Intel.
Anyone have any recommendations?

Budget: $100-150USD (yes i know its cheap) for just the CPU, yes.
What I will be using the PC for: Gaming mainly, Web browsing, Basic Office Apps, and watching DVDs.

So basically whats the best gaming AMD cpu can I get for my price range?

Thank you very much, I appreciate all comments.

is that what you plan to spend on your entire system or just the cpu?

if that is your price range you should look at a 3000+ or 3200+ venice core cpu... although they are becoming difficult to find.

Get an opteron socket 939. They're not currently instock but theres many places online that are selling 144's and 146's for around 150$, so you pretty much end up getting a 3000 or 3200 but with different stepping and 1mb L2Cache.
I think we'll see them in stock the beginning of next year, Jan. 4th seems to be the date I been finding.

No, I strongly doubt you'll be seeing them in stock again in January. AMD discontinued making those, so it's now or never.
