what programs are you running when it lags? Did you try defragging your harddrive? Also it is probably your programs fault not your processor

Unfortunately, AMD single cores don't have Hyper Threading like your P4, so it won't perform as well when multi-tasking. They're better suited to single applications. If you need to multi-task, then maybe a dual core would better suit your needs, if you can cope with just one application then the single core will do you just fine

HyperThreading isn't all that...Athlons can multitask just fine, thank you.

There's no way a 2.6HT p4 could ever outdo a 4000...you're dreaming! - HT turns the processor halfway into a dualcore (each core at 1.3GHz)...but it is not the uber multitasker everyone makes it out to be...it's most likely:
1) The programs are more resource/cpu hungry
2) You're running more programs
3) You're lying. Just kidding, I believe you.

yea, you've been chasing the magic dragon if you think a 2.6GHz P4 outdoes your 4000+. you're probably just thinking that you should be getting more performance than you're really getting atm. otherwise maybe check the way your memory is configured. maybe its single channel and you're running it dual, or some crap like that.

As previously said the amd single core chip performs nicely with multiple apps but not as well as a dual core. Try throwing more ram into your system.
Edit- Just noticed your 2 gigs or ocz ram O_o what 3 apps are u trying to run jeez

What's with the hostility here? Hyperthreading creates 2 logical processors which can execute several threads of code at the same time that a single core processor may not be able to. This would most likely be an advantage when the code is badly written.
There's no way that a P4 2.6Ghz would outperform an AMD 4000+ in applications, that's not what I meant. When opening several smaller programs then you may see a slight benefit in loading times as you are dealing with multiple threads of code. I presume this is where the lagging is taking place.
Single core AMDs can multitask and do it well.
