I'm pretty sure that the pin configuration would prevent you from putting it in another type of socket .
The pin itself probably does nothing specific, it's probably just used as a "key" to make sure you don't use the wrong Socket.

well, those opty's require ecc registered ram so kinda defeats the whole purpose of making it a 939 socket.

the configuration of the 940 and the 939 is the same except 1 pin. Located at...well look at one (at the corner) and you'll see

probably just a unique thing, so that you don't just go out and buy a cheap mobo for an opty and pop it in, cuz mobos for those are always good quality...

stick to 939 for now though. unless you are a crazylicious gamer

This is a quote from an article that I just read in the Jan 2006 issue of Compter Power User Magazine:

"In simple terms the new AMD Socket M2 will keep you from sticking the new processor into the wrong motherboard. The Socket M2 has a 940-pin configuration. You might be thinking to yourself, 'Well doesn't the AMD Opteron have a 940-pin socket?' And the answer would be yes, but even though the processors share the same pin count, the pin patterns are different, so the pin patterns are not interchangeable."

..."the new Socket M2 is basically there to facilitate AMD moving its products to DDR2,"
