Computer displays can only output progressive scans.
With my old XBox I hooked it up to one of my monitors and with just the menu displayed it wouldn't show up on the screen. It will say something to the effect of frequency out of range since it is trying to display an interlaced video signal. To get it to work you have to enable 480p in the menu (pressing the two triggers as well as the two thumbstick buttons all at the same time).
In short, you're video signal has to put out a progressive signal for it to work correctly. You can get 1080i to work but the picture may look really dim or not be displayed at all.
