Right now I'm running JBL Creature 2.1 speakers and have no need (or room) for 5.1s. But I am getting Medusa 5.1 headphones. Tell me how this is going to benefit me.
Honestly Trans, it is a noticeable jump up in quality and even more so for headphone listening. I've listened to both on the same speaker setup for countless hours on end as me and all my friends have the Logitech Z-560 4.1 setup. There's no question that it sounds better and the Crystalizer is really nice if you have a lot of mp3s on your comp of less than perfect quality. I'd say I enjoy the Crystalizer being on in about 8 out of 10 songs. As far as headphone listening, read this thread....the difference wasn't subtle.

There was an extremely big step up in audio quality from my previous sound card. The 3D positioning is much more accurate and the sounds fade in and out when you do things like looking left or right. My old card (Audigy 2 non-ZS) would just cut the sound it completely when your "ears" were no longer lined up to the audio source.

Would that be okay as a way to set up the speakers? because there isnt much room as you can see in the pic, only thing I wouldnt know is where to put the center...

Center channel is only used in movies. I don't know of any games that are configured in 5.1. The center channel is typically just a 1 khz filter to grab the human voice. (except dolby digital and DTS which are actually full range center) For gaming, only the 4 and sub are important. Have you thought about possibly hanging the rears from the ceiling on a chain linked to the ceiling with a simple planters hook? It'd cost you less than 2 bucks and works great!

Haha its a dorm room so I have to use what works lol, I dont wanna trip all over everything, my fan makes me trip enough LOL, Im going to be using it mostly for my music, so I would think the center speaker would be pretty necessary correct? where could I put the center speaker? well maybe I could get some of those hooks that have that sticky side..the ones by 3M, and stand on the desk and hang the rears a little higher, and hang the center behind and above my monitor a wee bit?

If the X-Fi makes that much difference on headphones, I'd just screw the speaker placement and get some headphones!

Seriously though, I'll probably end up getting a ZS because I saw one for $60 (about $50 cheaper than the X-Fi) that comes with some pretty good games.

No, center isn't used for music unless you listen to music in pro logic mode or something similiar and will sound like crap. You've got to remember that music is recorded in 2 channels unless it's DVD-audio or SACD. If it is, you'd need equipment capable of decoding it.

I have an x-fi and Medusa and it sound great. Make sure that you choose 5.1 as your setup when using those headphones.

And one thing that is better with the x-fi/medusa, is this. Each ear piece on the medusa headset, has a mini-subwoofer. If you boot your bass redirection option on with the boost gain, they actually shake on your head!!! It's insane. I turned my bass down though cause there were too many things in game shaking my head lol. I could never get those subwoofers to shake like that with my ZS.

And the sound quality is much better.

Unless you have a mixer. With the x-fi when I listen to music with my 7.1 system, I put on the Stereo Surround which is an option in the x-fi software and all my speakers have sound coming out of them. Granted, it's not actual positional 7.1, but sound is coming from every speaker. Definitely sounds better than just two speakers producing sound.

So should I even bother hooking up the center? I do watch movies on here sometimes, wrestling ones lol, and office space repeatedly, so then what should I do with the center...?
