Newegg has multiple GTS 250's for less than $120 dollars.

What brand is the 400W PSU? Is it the original one from the Compaq case? A really cheap upgrade would be to get a HD4670 for $37.99 shipped after MIR. I think that would handle most games at your res. It would be a lot faster than your 9400GT and you could put the savings to a new build fund.

If you are using a cheap PSU, then dont buy HD5000s, get a 9800GT, itll run much faster than yur current gpu, and it fits your budget.

9600gt, 8600gts, something along those lines. I feel like the psu is too fragile to be pushing a 9800gt or equivalent. But even if you may be able to put one to use that resolution is not going to be too demanding.

I sold an 8600gts a few months ago for like $35.

In that case definitely go with something like an 8600gts. I wouldn't spend more than $50 on a card you know will be collecting dust in 6 months or less.

im not going to buy another $35 gpu, thats what got me the 9400gt heh. if the gt240 comes out on the 17th like they say, ill see how it stacks up against the hd4770 in performance/watt. right now hd4770 is $110 and they say gt240 will be around $85, maybe less. we'll see next week i guess.

4770 should do the trick quite nicely. Highly energy efficient, OCs like a beast and crossfires to become equivalent to a 4890, if you will in the future roll like that (maybe for a new build...? )

Don't underestimate the value of the HD4670. It will blow your 9400GT out of the water. I think until you get a new monitor and system, a faster card wouldn't really be able to stretch it's legs.

If the info I've read is true about the GT240 it will be slower than the 9800GT and 8800GT, but equal to or faster than the 9600GT. Being slower than the 9800GT/8800GT is mostly due I'm guessing to the lower stream processor count of 96 vs 112. From what I've read it is going to have a 128-bit memory bus and come in both GDDR5 and GDDR3 versions. Like with the HD4770 that small memory bus is offset by the fast GDDR5 memory. If you do get it just make sure not to get the GDDR3 version. It just seems like an ugly duckling card to me. A revamped 8800GS/9600GSO if you will, which were strange cards themselves.

Anything sub 250 (220-240) is just weird IMO

So I'd say 9800 GT ftw.

But you know, maybe someone will suggest you hit the 4770.

You know, if you're willing to go to $130, maybe you can splurge $30 more on top of that and get a 5770 for ~$169
i agree with this logic
