I need a how-to: LAN 2 XP machines...

I have never done this before so I set out with google to figure out LAN gaming.
I have:

1 xp Pro 64-bit (server) 2 on-board Ethernet and Gigabyte card for LAN 1000Mbs

1 xp home 32-bit w/ 1 on-board Ethernet and matching Gigabit card

Linksys 4-port router cable/DSL/LAN (model NR041)

Incoming roadrunner cable internet coming off a single port modem (thiers)

yellow Ethernet cables including matching short pair for the LAN.

My goal:

I need LAN and a shared internet connection.

configuration now:

Server rig now serves internet to 2nd computer (using on-board ports only) leaving router open for LAN w/ matching Ethernet cards.
using cards, I am attached to router on both computers.
I have ran wizard on both with every option, 2 days now, what am I missing?

*sorry if in wrong section, mods feel free to move if needed, points to anyone attempting to help my stumped butt out.

yes i googled it!

Not checked your model, but your router is almost certainly only 100mbps. You should link your PCs with the gigabit cards for better performance. Set up this connection with an IP addresses in the 192.168.1.xxx range. Leave the gateway field blank. This gives a high speed connection between your server and pc. It has nothing to do with the internet.

Link both your server and pc to the router. Easiest way is to configure everything with DCHP. Make sure the pool is set to 192.168.0.xxx (or change the above so that the 2 networks are separate). If you need static IP addresses, either reserve addresses if your router can do it, or set each pcs address and the router separately in the 192.168.0.xxx range. This links your pcs to the internet. Because the gigabit route above is faster, by default it will not carry traffic (file transfers etc) between your pcs.

Your router should have 3 cables going to it - 1 into the WAN port from your modem, and 2 from the LAN ports going 1 each to your server and pc.

Don't bother with ICS (internet connection sharing). It just creates more problems, and you have paid for a router, you might as well use it. There is no reason to have the server provide the internet connection to the pc, unless you are running a UTM or similar (but if you are unsure about LAN setup, I would doubt this is the case).

That should get you started.

[Edit] Didn't want to sound like an idiot - first post was a few seconds after The_Beast's.

Basically, for shared internet connection, all you have to do is connect everything to your Linksys NR041.

If you want high-performance between the two computers, you can either connect them directly using ethernet cables (may or may not need crossover cables) and do what The_Beast suggested.

Or you can simply pick up a gigabit switch and connect your computers to that, which in turn connects to your Linksys router. DHCP and DNS are all handled by your router, and you only have a single subnet to deal with.

In a nutshell:

Computers > Gigabit Switch > Linksys NR041 > Modem.

Exactly. Not only will you share the internet connection, but you should be able to game over it as well.

Pull the gigabit switch out of the equation and your network will work just as well for most applications (including 1v1 deathmatch)

I only mentioned the gigabit direct connection as the OP seemed to draw attention to the fact he had gigabit cards. As mentioned above this is not really necessary, and adds a little complexity, but allows much higher transfer rates between the 2 computers if required.

Crossover cables are not needed, and in fact should not be used, for any gigabit connections. All gigabit connections should be straight wired Cat5e or better.

One thing you need to make sure of is to install the IPX protocol, and to enable NETBIOS over IPX (right click IPX and hit properties).

Certain games require it.

WOW so much information!

I bought these fast cards specifically for this LAN, the router was a closet find... definitely only 100Mbs, I can happily lose it.

My internet is road runner and the modem they gave me has only 1 port out.
so in order for internet to both computers, I have to serve on my sig rig OR figure out how to attach a router to their single port router/de-scrambler. I have tried this but could only get internet to one computer.

I have to keep internet on both machines, it saves me from having guests or children touch my rig at all.

Now from what you guys are telling me, I can just direct connect a Ethernet cable (yellow sheathing) to both computers using my gigabyte cards... no router or hub and i would get faster speeds? How would I determine addresses...DHCP and DNS? I havent a clue.

or

I can get a hub/switch combo on newegg $20. That would fix everything?

Would replacing with a newer router make noticeable speed difference over this linksys?

Thanks to you also beast! I don't want to quote you both.

*Oh and +1 for all the helpful ideas above.

your current kit will be more than sufficient - you are just experiencing setup issues. You will likely get better performance if you use the router rather than ICS too. You also don't need to leave both machines on if you only need to surf on one.

To start with, ignore your gigabit equipment, and get your internet LAN sorted out. Plug the modem into the WAN port on the modem, plug the other 2 computers into the LAN ports using their onboard ports. Hardware reset the router - this normally involves pushing a button down with a pin (check in the manual). Set the onboard network cards on your pcs to use DHCP. Now 'repair' each network connection, and it will get its IP address from the router. Depending on your router defaults you should now have internet on both pcs independent from each other.

Give it a go, and see if you can get it to work. Once you have that sorted we can get your gigabit connection up and running too.

I love this place!

OK so I found out why every LAN config would never connect and carry internet. The onboard Ethernet port was going bad, making for incredible frustrations.

I have followed your advice and now have both computers running internet from the router, I will have to get another card to continue my LAN goal. (need a 5600 pci-e or better GPU also)

I was searching out games that work well with LAN, and was a bit disappointed.
LAN is old school, and Im spoiled on the newer games.

My secondary computer is junky. The lag and lack of graphics is like handing them a broken controller and then shouting "I OWN J00!!!" at the top of my lungs as I complete the Humiliation ender.

Back to the drawing board.

Thanks again the_beast.

*yes I know about the newer LAN-able games (l4d, TF2, Grid), I just cant run em on the secondary.
