9 is the single most underrated FF of them all. Probably due to the overall negative reception of 8. Most FF gamers did not take to 8 too kindly, especially since it didn't exactly follow the building upon past FF games that the others followed (think about it, you can back trace a number of elements from any FF game to a previous FF within 1 or 2 releases, and see an earlier use of said element - except for 8 which largely did not do this).
9 was great, just below 7 and in my mind right about Anthologies. Kefka was one twisted dude.
12 was really just Square saying "You're right, 11? Our bad. We're sorry." Can't wait for 13 however.
For console RPGs I highly recommend:
God of War and God of War II - hack'n'slash gorey goodness, but has a damn
good story to it.
Legend of Dragoon
Secret of Mana
Legends of Mana
Suikoden I, II, II. Definitely NOT IV - haven't played V yet, as I'm still recovering.
and more for PC:
Lands of Lore III (very old, but well done)
Might and Magic VII
Lords of Magic
All I can think of right now, I'll try and dig up some more later.
