[Massively] Star Trek Online release date set (almost)

According to Eurogamer, Cryptic has confirmed that Star Trek Online is set for a February 2nd, 2010 release date in the U.S., and a February 5th, 2010 release in Europe. This comes about a month after Cryptic previously confirmed that STO was set for a first quarter 2010 release.

STO is currently in closed beta, allowing those lucky select fans a chance to the game out. If you previously had purchased the Champions Online lifetime or six month subscription package, you will also be getting a chance to try the game out during the closed beta stage.

We'll be sitting down with the STO development team soon, and are looking to take all the questions you have about the ships of STO; so hurry up and get them in before 12 p.m. PST tomorrow!

[Edit: We contacted Cryptic to confirm Eurogamer's story, and they say that this is not the official release date, but they will be announcing it very soon.]
This is the full article. Its pretty small so I'll save you the work of clicking the link.

I could see this game being kinda cool. The concept of Star Trek is interesting and fits an MMO well: Exploring new places, understanding new civilizations and living in harmony with new cultures have been concepts in every Star Trek series. Applying them to an MMO would be natural and you wouldn't have to depend on any previous lore to do so. You could make your own and not feel like you were not diverging from the spirit of Star Trek.

I am really liking what I've seen thus far from this game. Not that I am in the beta or anything, but just the tid bits they've clued us on to. However, I am not a Star Trek fan in any shape or form (though I dig basically any other type of Sci-Fi...go figure that out) though I am still planing on playing it.

I am just worried about the player population. Like if i say hey...let's go to <insert some star trek system name here> and hunt pirates. Some one will get all mad because the system is supposedly in the heart of some politcal body and the current time line doesn't allow for pirates. just ruins a fun game for me.

Either that or they won't be able to hear me on Team Speak because they have their pointy Spock ears on.

I like Star Trek, but most companies do terrible at making Star Trek video games. Let me direct your attention to Star Trek: DAC. I've seen this game somewhere else before... random starships flying about shooting other starships because of a thin plot laid atop the game to give tribute to the spirit of Star Trek. I could be wrong, but then their marketing includes,

Quote:
Engage the enemy in unique game play modes, including: Online Versus, Online Co-op, and Survival mode
Not the least bit "unique" and if that is considered unique...

Anyway, back to Star Trek Online: I hope this game will actually break the "terrible, terrible... mmm... iffy" streak of games in recent years. Elite Forces was pretty good, though that was more of a FPS than most anything.

Star Trek Online will be the first AAA MMO to feature space and ground combat at launch.

Hmm, well that does sound promising and is more what I'd like to see in a Star Trek game. Reminds me of the old Original Series and TNG games. Granted they weren't exactly dynamic, being almost 20 years old now, but they were fun for their time; about time there was one made in the 21st century.

No you just cant give out details about the game, Or video or Screen shots. You know the cool stuff.

I hope this is good. But most likely they will screw it up.
