Asus A8N-SLI SATA Drive suddenly vanishes!

Salutations!

As title!

Machine has been great, trouble free for 4 months when suddenly "BOOT DISK FAILURE" message on startup?.

Initially I suspected the drive had failed as it is not being detected by the BIOS so bought a new drive. No good. Checked cables, connections etc. all fine.

What I find odd is that it should be functioning perfectly and then suddenly cease ... most of what I have read here is drives that cannot be found after a rebuild or BIOS flash, overclocking etc. Alas, not the case for me.

The only thing that has ceased functioning on the board itself is the chipset fan, which appears to be a common fault with this board!

Any suggestions please, guys?

well I would suggest getting a different chipset cooler. the Zalman little blue one works well... even w/ SLI

double check in the bios to make sure the SATA ports are turned on... or if you use raid that the raid controllers are enabled. you have to turn each SATA port on that you want to use.

That happened to me a day ago.
I just switched to sata port 2 or w/e.
And it worked fine.
Havent tried port 1 again cus Im too lazy to test to see if it works.

HDD Makers Have Loads Of Diagnosic Downloads As Well. I Would Check SATA Settings And Even Change Cables And Troubleshoot The HDD With Another Rig. If All Else Fails Get Out The Ohm Meter And Start Testing? Its Most Likely A Simple Oversight Somewhere? Keep A Simple Record Of Your Troubleshooting To Save You Time And Frustrations? There Are Multiple Possibilities For Problems As Well So Don't Be Surprised To Find More Than One Potential Problem? Hopefully The Help From Members Here Can Help You Work Through It?

Thankyou for the responses thus far!

Tried all four board based SATA ports, tried enabling RAID and enabling SATA1 then through SATA 1-4 ... removed network and sound card, changed cables removed / swapped RAM. Cannot detect the old drive or the newly purchased drive ... :***:

Could this problem be caused by outdated chipset drivers / BIOS?

I found an old IDE drive kicking around so plugged that in to see if the BIOS could actually detect anything ... well it does. It will quite happily see the IDE drive but no go with SATA?

Problem solved, although not the answer some may be hoping for when searching ... faulty Motherboard. After 7 months or so of faultless performance Chipset fan failed and unable to detect SATA drives. Back it goes!

Yep, don't mention it!
