Future Build

Ohhhhk. so heres my plan.

Next year i will be going off to college, and i want to bring my desktop with me!
So throughout the year i will be upgrading when i can(while saving money for college haha) so im going to go though the dates and the amount of money i will be able to spend! I am basically trying to have the best rig i can get by september next year, and i just want to start buying parts now....sooo i already have a Corsair 650 psu that should be good still. other that that i plan to upgrade everything.

1.First off currently i need a sound card. i have a budget of $40-$80 on it. and i figure that soundcards are future proof enough for at lest a few years.
I really have no knowledge of them whatsoever so any advice is good (;

2. During chirstmas i will be able to get $200-$300 worth computer parts. I know that i want to buy the Storm scout case ($90) which will leave me with around $200 for other parts....now im not sure what to buy at this point that will be future proof enough till then. I just like this case cause it looks sweet, and i has the handles for carrying haah

3. In june/july my graduation present is (suppost) to be a laptop, but my parents said i could if i wanted take their old laptop and use the money to upgrade my computer. whiiich will be around $800. Now with this i obviously plan to buy a new cpu, mobo, and ram.(potentially the new gpu too)

Sooo guys this is my plan... I figure i don't need a "really" nice laptop and i can just take their old one if i need to bring it to the library or something. It would be nice to have a nice desktop tho cause i plan on majoring in computer engineering. Thanks in advance guys (:

it would be nice to order the sound card tonight too cause i need a non-onboard for a program im running!

I don't know whats all coming out in the future either sooo i really don't know what parts to even start looking at!

+rep to all helpers! (:

Hmm, by the looks of this, it looks like a good sound card.

But the problem is that it's PCI-E 1x, which is a real hassle.

Although this also looks decent to me.

Alrighty i found some parts that i think are decent for the rig im going to build. I realize that the price in parts will go down because new ones will be coming out. I overshot my budget, but i think it is still doable. heres what i got

Case- CM Storm Scout

CPU- i7 920

HD- WD Green 1 TB. I know this item will def change by the time i buy because Hd are on the fall and SSD are on the rise(although many will agrue not XD)

GPU-Evga 285. Hopefully the price will drop ALOT around june/july. but im open to any suggestions. Hopefully i will be folding at college sense i dont have to pay utilities (:

Monitor-Asus 23.6". This is the other item i was looking at purchasing around christmas as it is fairly future proof. I was also wondering if using a HD tv is also a good idea for a monitor? should i get a 29-32" HD tv that could double as a tv and monitor?

RAM-Corsair 3x2 gb. another item i expect to drop in price a lot by july. Don't know much about ram, but this had decent timings, good reviews and cheaper than most 6 gig sets.

MOBO- Foxconn BloodRage
Seems to be best mobo for me. No need for tri-sli

This is the sound card some people are running.

This is the pci express version.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829132006

This is same thing but pci.

Otherwise like pigpoo suggested Creative is the bigest vendor with the most choice.

Have you considered the next generation i7 or i5 1156 socket like I am running. You can save money on mobo and memory if you go that route.

like rightwing said, the 1156 stuff is really nice for the money, you can get more power for your dollar if you do. but if you decide to go the 1366 route the new i7's should be out by first quarter next year, which are supposed be a lot nicer than the last generation of i7 9xx processors.
the new hd5 series gfx cards would be a nice match for ether of those. also, because you are currently in need, the higher end asus boards come with dedicated x-fi sound cards.

hope that helps

ohhh even nicer? ill have to see what they look like.

as for the hd5 cards...im still hoping to fold while at college so i might stay with nvidia and look at the new fermi cards when they come out.

And i think thats it for the sound card im going to order the Xonar tonight (:

Instead of that 285, you could go for 2x HD5770s in Xfire for about $30 cheaper (currently), and it would be better. Also, the prices of 5770s would drop a lot by june/july.
